Chip Type: Intel Pentium 4
Processor Speed: 1.7 GHz
Memory (RAM): 256 MB
Hard Drive Capacity: 40 GB
Primary Drive: DVD-ROM
Features: Graphics Card, Keyboard, Modem, Monitor, Mouse, Operating System, Printer, Speakers, USB
Is this a fairly good spec for a PC mainly used for std net surfin (512 connection) - ie mainly BB's, MSN etc.... and also normal PC shit like word, excel, photoshop etc....
And what would one expect to pay for a desktop system, in good second hand condition, with that spec?

Oh well, price on that system is £190 and reserve not met
So if not worth more than £100 then no point bidding...
I was looking at this one;
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...127415133&rd=1
But starting to go out of my price range now too

basically thats an ok system, although i would want to know the graphic card details, what monitor, mouse keyboard etc, I have not seen a p4 1.8ghz pc for £100, although saying that you could maybbe pick up a barebones system cheap. I will have a look for ya and reply later

that 1.7 P4 system isnt that bad... but TBH for a little more money you can get a lot more PC if you know what i mean
Rough price for you..

keyboard+mouse £15
motherboard £55 (inc sound/lan)
celeron 2.8ghz £70
512Mb DDR ram £50
17" monitor £70

Stu, I don't know it might be
Problem with this one is it is very dated by todays standards, small (9gb) HDD, small RAM, small MHz processor, and is soooooooooo full of shit in there it's better off just starting again, with a more uptodate operating system....
Would be usefull to be able to keep this one running too and bung it in another room (connected via router) for backup/other use too.... hence why I want to renew and start again
Have been looking at these;
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...hs1&l=en&s=dhs
This I thought was quite cheap, but not as good spec;

Thanks for all your reply's folks, shall await your reply Gra - hope the above give an idea of what it is a I want
TBH what I really want is a complete system, so I can keep this one complete. My sis jsut started college so she is gonna be needing to use it a lot, and will want half decent net access, so I have just ordered a router and get that installed in a few weeks, so she can have this one (and also my mother would be able to use it for her lesson plans and shit for school) while the new one is in place of this from normal use (me and bro basically) - and that leaves me another LAN port for my laptop upstairs (shitty old school cost £50 but least I get a bit of peace and quiet
)

Stu - sounds intruiging(sp).... Personally I think ifI was to build or have one built, then I'd go for 80-120gb HDD, p4, 512 RAM, at least a 400MHz processor.... Than just add CD-RW, DVD-RW, floppy, maybe one of them multimedia card readers (one that fits in a floppy drive slot rathern than a USB attached one), and then just get a std keyboard and mouse - not sure on monitors - fancy a nice TFT one?

What I want to know tho is that tower only worth £90? Or is it overpriced etc....
Speakers, mouse, keyboard etc all cheap enough to pick up, decent monitors look like they hard to get for less than £150 (for flat TFT/LCD I mean)

HI mate, sorry i couldnt get on earlier I have been installing fooking P4's all day, (I should have nicked ya one lol)
Second hand I have been looking and for a P4 1.7ghz, you are looking to pay in the region of £150-£200 notes, for anew barebones system, (no monitor, software etc) you can expect to pay upwards of £250-£300.
have a look here at this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...126773364&rd=1
I think the best thing to do if your on a budget is look for a system which dont have a monitor or keyboard, the shitter the software the better. becuase i can give your a 17inch monitor for free if needed, plus i can sort you any software fro free if needed, so tis worth looking for that. there are some good P4s on ebay for £300 nnotes, but you dont say what your budget is. I cant build you one cos i dont have the time at the mo, Jim may knock one toghether, but you may find it cheaper to get a second hand P4 rather than source all new components

So is that system good then? I see it's got a pretty decent HDD and large RAM, but I don't know about anything else
bIs it worth that money?
as a general rule, you should be looking for as bigger a hardrive as you can get, 40gigs is a good start, memory you would want at least 256+. depending on whether you are playing any games or not will determine what spec video card you should aim for, if your not bothered about gaming then anything like a 16meg, 32meg card will keep costs down and still give good quality whilst being able to give good display rates, dont get caught up with CD rewriters cos they cost peanuts nowadays and are piss easy to install,(£15-20notes, for a cd writer, £45 for a dvd writer).
like i said dont get carried away with software, cos i hopefully get you most stuff, if i cant then you should be able to find iton the net,
that auction ounds cool, plus he says he never got the stand to stand the PC upright, but i can give you one of these for nowt anyway
monitors i can sort you a 17" if you want, but TFT's are going for about £80 ish

Stu - yeah just got my router from ebuyer - some good deals on there
Gra - we changed the CD-ROM for CD-RW and it was like £25 a couple of years ago, and the DVD-RW was about £60
last year....
Not wanting to sound picky, but that PC looks cack
Hate the keyboard and mouse
Can you get me a good flat TFT 17" for £80 then? If so I might just buy a tower set up and add normal keyboard and mouse and a screen to it, as these can be had for penuts on ebay anyway.... I guiess 90% are interchangeable?
Not really interested in games on PC, more just a net surfer, but obviously 2.2GHz processor is better than 1.7, but is 1.7 slow? I don't even know what I have in mine
Doubt it's P4 tho.... As I said this is over 5yrs old now....
Budget wise I don't want to spend much above £300, cos £300 will get me a Dimension 2400, or for a few quid more a 3000 from Dell, and they are P4, with 512 RAMs and shit..... And include monitors and ancilleries....
