Default Funeral Poems

Sorry to put a bit of a downer topic but you always seem to find out good stuff from other people in this case.

My father passed away 19th September, and i need a poem. All the poems i have read are aimed at something particular, eg, cot death, cancer etc etc.

I just want a nice simple poem that says he will be missed. One of his funeral songs is already Luther Vandross Dance with my father. Im thinking of putting the chorus on a card with the flowers. But i want something that can relate from everyone to put in the booklet thing at the service.

If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Jade

im very sorry to hear of your fathers passing away.

would this be of any use to you?

Not, How Did He Die, But How Did He Live?

Not how did he die, but how did he live?
Not what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away.
hope this helps

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.

Each night we shed a silent tear,
As we speak to you in prayer.
To let you know we love you,
And just how much we care.
Take our million teardrops,
Wrap them up in love,
Then ask the wind to carry them,
To you in heaven above.

I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new
I thought about you yesterday and days before that too,
I think of you in silence I often speak your name
All I have are memories and your picture in a frame
Your memory is my keepsake with which I’ll never part
God has you in His keeping I have you in my heart.

Our Father kept a garden.
A garden of the heart;
He planted all the good things,
That gave our lives their start.

He turned us to the sunshine,
And encouraged us to dream:
Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem.

And when the winds and rain came,
He protected us enough;
But not too much because he knew
We would stand up strong and tough.

His constant good example,
Always taught us right from wrong;
Markers for our pathway that will last
a lifetime long.

We are our Fathers garden,
We are his legacy.
Thank you Dad we love you.

perhaps a slightly modified version of this (as seen on the McRae condolence site) :

They Have Gone.

You can shed tears that they have gone
or you can smile because they lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that they will come back
or you can open your eyes and see all that they have left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see them
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember them and only that they have gone
or you can cherish their memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what they would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an after glow
of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun
of happy memories
that I leave when life is done.

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free
I’m following the path God has laid you see.
I took His hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way
I found that peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Oh yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savored much
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and peace to thee
God wanted me now; He set me free.

Firstly Jade, sorry to hear of your loss

Was listening to Eminem, Curtain Call album earlier, track 16 is quite a moving track, here is the chorus;

When i'm gone, just carry on
dont mourn
rejoice, every time you hear the sound of my voice
just know that
i'm looking down on you smiling
And that i cant feel a thing
so baby don't feel no pain
just smile back

Rich.

What is a Dad?

A dad is one of life's best gifts,
Someone to treasure all life through,
he's caring and loving,
Thoughtful and true,
Someone who is always a special part of your life,
Someone who holds a prime place in your heart,
he's a mentor, a confident and also a friend,
Someone on whose love you can depend.
A dad always has your best interests at heart,
he's someone so dear and so good,
he's a blessing, he's a gift,
he's a treasure like no other,
he's someone that is truly wonderful.
Wherever you go, and whatever you do,
A dad's love will always see you through,
A dad is truly invaluable,
Indispensable and unforgettable.
I wouldn't want anyone but you,
And that's why I'm so grateful,
that life picked you for me.

God looked around his garden
And saw an empty space.
He then looked down upon this earth
And saw your smiling face.

God's garden must be beautiful,
He always takes the best.
For an unknown reason he took you
up to heaven, and shielded you with grace.

It broke our hearts to see you go,
But you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

A Dad is a person
who is loving and kind,
And often he knows
what you have on your mind.

He's someone who listens,
suggests, and defends
A dad can be one
of your very best friends!

He's proud of your triumphs
but when things go wrong
A dad can be patient
and helpful and strong.

In all that you do,
a dad's love plays a part
There's always a place for him
deep in your heart.

And each year that passes
you're even more glad,
More grateful and proud
just to call him your dad!

Fathers are wonderful people Too little understood,
And we do not sing their praises
As often as we should...

For, somehow, Father seems to be
The man who pays the bills,
While Mother binds up little hurts
And nurses all our ills...

And Father struggles daily
To live up to "his image"
As protector and provider
And "hero of the scrimmage"...

And perhaps that is the reason
We sometimes get the notion,
That Fathers are not subject
To the thing we call emotion,

But if you look inside Dad's heart,
Where no one else can see
You'll find he's sentimental
And as "soft" as he can be...

But he's so busy every day
In the grueling race of life,
He leaves the sentimental stuff
To his partner and his wife...

But Fathers are just wonderful
In a million different ways,
And they merit loving compliments
And accolades of praise,

For the only reason Dad aspires
To fortune and success
Is to make the family proud of him
And to bring them happiness...

And like Our Heavenly Father,
He's a guardian and a guide,
Someone that we can count on
To be always on our side.

We're never ready to say goodbye
To someone we hold dear.
If it were up to us, dear Dad,
We'd always keep you here.
But God has reasons of His own
And plans we cannot know,
And these are always for our good,
Though it may seem not so.
Our arms are empty and our hearts
Are filled with tears and grief,
For we who loved each day with you,
Now find those days too brief.
Yet if we could only heaven see,
We'd know you're happy there,
And we would never call you back
When such great joy you share.
And so we'll trust you to God's great care
And know some day, once more,
We'll hold you to our hearts again
When we reach heaven's shore.

no one is truly dead while there is someone who remembers them is what i'm going to say tomorrow at my mates funeral

use it to remind you off the good times you've had over the years and don't blame him for leaving you so early
