The TV's are coming down in price a lot recently!
The 46" Sony Bravia lcd has come down to that sort of money now if you shop about, I liked it a lot but went for the 40" model instead as it was only for my room.
Do not buy from 1stAudioVisual though mate, mine came through there and I waited 3 months for the cinema system to turn up ! Then to make matters worse their finance company wont allow them to do finance anymore and I apparently have to change who I pay at MY cost
I'll be starting another thread on that later

yeah me dads been looking at the bravia's,
It really depends what your dad is going to use it for. As an example sky HD only outputs in 720p and 1080i so if you buy a 1080p TV it will exceed this anyway. People automatically think 1080p is the best quality and is better than a 1080i TV, this is not always the case.
All 1080i and 1080p means is; the amount of pixels the TV can display, 1080i and P are 1920x1080, similar to your PC Monitor res(prob 1280x768). The i bit of 1080 stands for interlaced and P stands for progressive. A progressive scan is generally better. The difference between the two is progressive refreshes all the pixels.
What is important is the contrast, brightness and black levels and most importantly the picture quality which has nothing to do with 1080i or 1080p. I personally thing the Samsung LE46M86BD is a good TV and can be had for less than your budget.
I would suggest going to www.avforums.com and have a read on there of peoples actual experiences of owning the products.

the avforums are for geeks though
what you want is someone who is geeky enough to read them to post here and diliute the geekiness down to a level us normal morons understand
but he's away in new york at the moment otherwise he'd have written a ginge type reply and linked up everything from everywhere (including the 58 page therad somewehre about a telly i bought when i wanted to know how to change the settings on it
)

Regarding 1St Audi Visual I actually got a phone call off them today and its not there side of things that are at fault.
The finance company they used caled Able To Buy have gone under and obviously haven't paid them for the sales they have been making.
Their prices are VERY good and if you pay straight out then there should be no problem whatsoever

Im in the same boat but think ive decided on the Sharp 46" as it has a very fast refresh rate on 4ms thats the big downfall with large LCD's over plasmas. so ive been told anyway
cheers for all advice, i still find it pretty confusing
theres 2 much stuff to take into account
well my dad is on about getting this one
http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/t...Specifications
for £1600
its 1080p
the contrast is 15000:1
but the brightness is 1,000cd/m2 whereas i have seen others at 1300cd/m2

Surely watching er.. Sports Entertainment is a tad more embarrassing if you take thrusth as an example, he's a technogeek of the higest proportions when it comes to this sot of thing, but ask him to wire up a lightbul and he's lost
so ask him the question you would normally ask, he'll either andswer it or geek it out of the av forum lot and then tell you, in nice plain english
