Default Focus ST170 Engine Turbo or Throttle Bodies?

Hi

right ive got a new project car a 92 escort with full cosworth body kit and interior, its the best rep ive seen and has had a 5 page spread in fast ford for being such a good look aliky.

Its running a fiesta rs1800 engine atm with 150bhp now the car is in bad shape so needs alot of work doing to her and hopefully she will get a refeature if i get her mint again but im going to have to do something different.

Im going to transplant a ST170 engine and the 6speed gearbox. But what do i do? Turbo or throttle bodies? I cannont decide which is the best choice, turbo will be more expensive and more complicated but throttle bodies will be easier and more usable.

What sort of bhp could i get out of each? has anyone tuned a ST170 engine like this before?

If i turbo it i will use this inlet

http://www.cosworth.com/shop_item.php?productid=72

and the throttle bodies will be these

http://www.cosworth.com/shop_item.php?productid=77

any help or ideas will be great.

Matty

yes ive been told this before but why does the engine have the duratec badge if it isnt?

what duratec engine are the throttle bodies for?

either way they could still be made to fit

With cams and head work around 220 bhp is possible TBs if you do it properly. Talk to the experts www.dunnell.co.uk

It's a Zetec, it's part of Fords badging shite that they do, for example new fiesta, the only duratec they use is the ST150 engine, but they're all badged as Duratecs even tho the rest are Zetecs.

It'll fit the 2.0 / 2.3 Duratec HE engine, as found in Focus/Fiesta/Mondy

It might be worth finding a Mazda, some of them use turbo'd duratec HE's so that'd be a good base to plan your engine on

I have Zetec turbo manifold as used by Power Engineering for their turbo conversion if you're interested?

You do need to ditch the standard manifold, but can easily link to another one as the standard item is in two parts with hoses linking the bit attached to the head and the runners/plenum part.

Other options are an FRS manifold, Adrenaline's item, the Fiesta Frenzy/Area 6 one......etc

the main problem you'll have with the ST170 engine is the VVT even if you put it in standard!

turboing it will just add more issues because of the high compression!

honest advice, use a different engine

...but as you retain the EECV to perform dash/ac functions, there is no reason why you couldn't map for boost using an omex/pectel/motec/megasquirt/dta whatever, and remap the VVT to suit using Dreamscience. Ok so it would add to the bill, but the potential performance gains have been well demonstrated by Audi et al...

Further more, it *should* be possible to add a MAP sensor to the EECV anyway as there are spare sensor pins on the ST170. The RS also uses an EECV so it should be possible to enable it as a load sensor in dreamscience

Yes but the manufacture quoted hp will be at the flywheel whereas the power runs will be on a dyno which explains the difference.

Power figures are usually quoted in ''PS'' not BHP.

Quotes in this country are in BHP, PS is a metric equivalent, standing for PFEDERSTARKE, literally HORSE STRENGTH, it is very very near the same power wise.
1 PS = 0.9863201 BHP.
