the feed for the sender is earthing out somewhere.
i cant see it being an earth problem tho as if the keys are in the ignition and its on it will just go above the red but it will take about a minute to get there then when you start the car it will go into the red but it will take a good 5 minutes to get there could this still be an earth
Highly likey that the sensor is fugged. Before replacing though, remove the connector & clean using a suitable cleaner & maybe a little wet & dry or small wire brush. Replace connector to see if it makes any difference.
I can't see it being a short if it takes time to progressively work its way up. If it was the gauge would be up there in the red in about 20 seconds tops. I bet if you unplug it from the sender it doesnt move right - so theres no way it could be a short.
Which sender have you got? Round terminal or flat terminal?
Now being a series 1 it SHOULD have a flat terminal sender in there, ive read various stories about the later senders not working properly with the early instruments.
On one of my old mk1 orions i had a round terminal sender and that worked fine though, but for the few £ they cost i would get the proper sender and try that first, if not it must be your gauge.
alright fella if you pop round my house ive got the one i took off my old head you can try if not can you bring the car round so i can have a quick look at it
