Your guage could be knackered.

Now being a series 1 it SHOULD have a flat terminal sender in there, ive read various stories about the later senders not working properly with the early instruments.

On one of my old mk1 orions i had a round terminal sender and that worked fine though, but for the few £ they cost i would get the proper sender and try that first, if not it must be your gauge.
