Pros and cons please.

My XR2 doesnt run the water cooling, as I think putting red hot water from the turbo doesnt help the normal rad temps.

Your views?

 

No, you're right, red hot water from the turbo doesn't help the coolant temps, but is that really the answer?

I wouldn't remove the water cooling.

 

ive always run water cooling and all is ok. I really dont understand this obsession recently on here about water cooled turbos or non water cooled turbos

 

my turbo doesnt even have the water cooling jacket lol

so with that, no, i wont run water cooling

 

i run the water cooling in mine, and even in temps of 30+ last summer the car never went past the 'o' in norm

not really an issue if its a road car and your coolant system is up to the job

 

Ball-bearing Turbos MUST run water cooling. Some turbos were designed to not have water cooling, of course in those circumstances, it's fine.

Personally, if I had cooling problems that I thought were heavily contributed to by the fact that the water flows through the turbo, I would put a separate turbo cooler on before I removed the water feeds.

 

The OIL does as much cooling as the water, so using decent oil will help a lot.
The temp of the water existing the turbo is no problem at all as it is miniscule compared to the coolig capacity of the radiator and it's cooling potential.
As said ball bearing ones need water cooling, but it is not so vital on others.

In all my previous turbo'd cars I've always disconnected the water from the turbo & never had a problem !

Now I'm runnin a GT35 so I gotta run water through it So added a Pre-Rad to combat it ! Every little helps in my book !

P.s. Jus incase anyone didn't know, cooling wasn't the main intention of the turbo being plumed into the cooling system

 

just because the water is hotter coming out of the turbo than the rest of the engine, it doesn't mean that it will be placing a big load on the cooling system - that is related to both flow and temperature

EDIT - had the post open a while before i replied, so didn't see tabetha's earlier reply which makes the same point

 

Imagine pouring a cup of boiling water into a cold bath.... won't change the temperature of the bath by bugger all.

Now look at the bore of the water pipes that come from your cossie t3 and the amount of water in the whole cooling system.

 

My feed pipe is leaking!!, so got to take off and braize up.

Water cooling was added to prolong the life of the turbo
Whilst the engine is running the oil supply to the turbo cools the core assembly, once the engine is stopped the turbo continues to spin winding down to rest eventually.
There is no longer any oil flow to cool the hot turbo core and the shaft and bearings will overheat as the heat from the hot exhaust side conducts is way along the shaft .Water will thermo syphon around the core and take this heat away.

 

I have never run water cooling on any of my T-series turbos. However, there us absolutely no point what-so-ever in removing it on a road car, it would NEVER get hot enough to justify it.

I have it removed on my car for two reasons.

1. It is used extensively as a track car, so every single bit of extra cooling I can achieve is valid.
2. One less thing to go wrong / leak - especially as leaking coolant is a danger to me and others on track (this is how Chris Woods lost his life ).

 

On a race car the turbo's where rebuilt regularly.
The levels of boost and sustained loads the turbo's where under, meant they often failed so issues of hot shut downs as they nipped into tesco's on lap 5 where never an issue lol
Mike often nips into the hair salon on lap 2 so hot shut downs may be an issue for him

 

So does the water circulating around the turbo have negligable (sp) effect on turbo temps ??

very common to have a hairline crack where the pipe is brazed to the banjo fitting, and difficult to pinpoint - but an easy job once you know what you're looking at
