headgasket, rings, cracked block???
hi,
took the cossie out tonite to change the oil and on the way back there were some combine harvesters in the road, so i dipped the clutch to slow down and it cut out, started it back up and it was on 3 cylinders with plumes & plumes of thick white smoke comin out. at first i thort rings or id melted it, but it came back on 4 after a while lots of smoke and the temp was sky high....so my question is, do you think its headgasket, rings or cracked block
. There was no mayonaise on oil cap water didnt look that oily either, but i pulled the dipstick out and oil was really thin. also its a 4 layer gasket...i hear these are pretty difficult to break...
cheers
Dave

whip the plugs out and see if one stands out as being contaminated, then do a cylinder leakage test on this cylinder ,if its h/g the header tank will bubble if it leaks into the coolant system
when people say wire rung 99% of the time it aint a coopers ring gasket.
Dave cos...it wont be melted if you were only driving slowly.
Check the easy things first as its unlikey the head gasket just goes like that either.
Big problems usually occur right after some vey fast drivig or heavy load situations.

about 5 minutes before this happened i gave it a little, but it wasnt a progressive failure, it was instant, i kno because i was watching water temperature and oil pressure after having just changed the oil. ahh well...i guees its time to whip the head off.

the coopers rimgs are a far more extensive way of sealing the head to block and requires a good bit of machining.
normal wire rung blocks are just a cheaper easier way of trying to do the same.
I havent heard anyone saying the coopers rings are bad?
