custom pistons are going to cost a fair amound,, do you think your design is going to be a marked improvement over others already on the market?

He doesnt mean custom pistons I suspect, he just means they will pikc out the nearest and then maybe skim a set for him or something.

If he is going to be designing the ringland height from the crown and the thickness of the rings etc, then I suspect its going to come out fucking shite if he needs to ask questions like that!

"To your spec"

In what way?

Do you get to decide the distance between the groves, the shape of the bowl, the height of the ring pack from the crowen, the thickness of the crown from the bowl, the height of the pin in the piston, the thickness of the rings themself?

Seriously mate, if you do, thats a PROPERLY skilled job.

on the custom piston order for they ask for everything,, deck height,, bore stroke, engine capacity, size of the pin ect,, thats why i need to talk to someone that knows about this stuff, thats why i have asked for help ect.. otherwise i agree with you IT IS A "PROPERLY" SKILLED JOB,, i want to find someone that knows about this stuff and have a chat with them..

If you just copy the existing design, its not a "custom piston" is it though?
Its just a cheap knockoff foreign copy

To start altering any of the basic characteristics much, you need to be ordering 20 sets all slightly different and then building engines with each.

Honestly mate, just buy some off the shelf ones that are known to work!

Its just not the sort of thing you want to be fucking around with yourself when you clearly know nothing about it!

Chip, it's not that easy. There really aren't very many decent Forged pistons on the market for the CVH.

The ones in my engine and the engine that we are selling were made by Ross Racing and were spec'd in full. OK, so they were loosely based on a standard piston, but only in so much as to get the approximate sizes, then the desired compression height and so on was decided from there.

That's a custom piston in my eyes and is pretty much what he is after.

That said, £2k for a complete bottom-end, built is a bargain IMO.

The pistons will cost around £600+, the rods were £700, that's £1300 already.

If it was someone like JE, they will just pluck an existing design off the shelf, unless its all a paper exercise to get round a copyright???

Sometimes they will "design" you a piston based on a spec sheet you supply, but basically just use an existing design they already have that belongs to someone else that matches that spec and change the CR by 0.1 or something, I know of examples of companies doing this in the past.

By the way, if you think im being awkward its cause im just trying to get to the truth of what you are actually making so I can help you!

"custom pistons to my spec" and "copy a standard piston and tweak the CR" are not even vaguely the same thing in my opinion!

Apologies for not replying sooner christian, I must have opened the page to reply before your reply was in it as I didnt see it!

If that is what he is wanting to do, then sending them a piston makes the most sense, and just tell them what he wants difference, which no doubt will be just the CR anyway????
