Default How can I improve fuel economy

I am using my car quite a bit at the minute going to and from work and could do with any suggestions on how to improve fuel economy. I don't drive the car hard when driving to and from work but don't really notice any difference. The engine is a fresh rebuild running standard running gear. Would converting to a coil pack be an option?

Cheers
Dave

get a smart car

only joking , try an msd closed loop lambda system , this will sort any over fuelling out unless you boost a lot .

it would also help if you tell people what stage of tunning your running , green injectors, standard injectors , 2wd , 4wd etc . there always glad to help on here you just have to supply the right info .

Depends what sort of MPG you are looking for ?
If you are used to a 1400 diesel you are going to be dissappointed!!
I average around 26mpg, closed loop will help, but you then have to figure in ANY cost of mods to achieve better MPG, as you don't make a return on the investment until it ihas paid for itself, so if it is only for ranother month or two, probably not worth doing anything other than making sure it is running right, and making sure the CTS is ok, ie if more than say 5/7 years old bung a new one in .
As said need more info on car, and what MPG you are getting now.
Coilpack will not do anything more than a group a coil if you are not having sparking issues but the group a coil is a massive benefit for the money, as are decent leads.

I am running standard injectors with a stage 1 chip around 270bhp. Its is 2wd with a standard rebuilt turbo. Everything apart from a cone filter and stainless exhaust is standard.

I've only had the car just under a year so don't know if the CTS has been replaced or not. Might do it anyway for how much they cost. I'll invest in a group a coil and get it checked over to make sure everything is working as it should. I am getting around 60 miles to Ł10.

60 miles to Ł10 is good, don't think theres much wrong with that, If you need better than that better get a run around for to and from work, mine on a gunship does about 110 miles to Ł20 don't forget it is about Ł1.07 per litre for the good stuff.

Might have to consider a runaround then if the prices of petrol keep going up.

Mine's stage 3 on Greens, I try and get 80 miles for Ł20. On a motorway run I get better - but only if I stay off boost as much as possible - the difference between 60-70mph and around 90mph is about 100%.

lol this really gets me why do people cry "FUEL ECONOMY"
when they go out and buy a car that that is not made to be
economical??? if you want fuel economy sell ya cossie an get
a mini or something, your cosworth is never going to be cheap to run.
ffs anything with a turbo strapped to it is going to chew up your wallet
in gas. count yourself lucky you dont own a turbo skyline or you'll
really be moaning.

I wasn't moaning as such. There's new technology coming out all the time i.e. closed loop etc which I thought might be beneficial for fuel economy. I put this post up to get other peoples views and what they have done to improve things.

thats good fuel economy that if its mainly motorway driving then go for the closed loop conversion, round town the closed loop won't make any difference failing that use the bike
once did 60 miles to a full tank of optimax in mine just on a steady drive round donnington park as well

rubbish. you obviously don't know the details of when the closed loop stategy is working

depends on how you drive around town and what the map is like now

it could be more beneficial around town than on the motorway

i have got closed loop fitted to my car, there was no significant improvement with around town driving to justify the cost. on long journies though it makes a lot of difference

The cossie i got from ian is a right greedy bstard, i get 50 mies to Ł20 around town, on a longer drive its better. I actually managed 75 to Ł20 the other day. I dont really mind most of my other cars did the same approx, even my r 5 turbo wasnt much better, when its empty fill it up.

can't be done on L6 ecu, needs 4x4 L8 with standard babyboard + chip (and you need to add the cost of a PF09 TPS and a lambda sensor + boss welded to downpipe and wiring)

I might be wrong but i'm sure that i read somewhere on here that stu himself told someone off here taht closed loop on stage one is not beneficial and advised the guy to go for stage three with closed loop ( can't for the life of me remember who it was or what post) but the guy did go for the later and was well happy.

p.s. could of read it wrong but i'm sure i'm remembering right

its not too often that the words "cosworth" and "economy" are used in the same sentence!!!!

just fill it up when its empty and stop looking at the miles you get,it wont seem as bad then,or buy a diesel!!

I GOT 120 MILES OUT OF A QUARTER OF A TANK IN MY 4X4 ON THE MOTOR WAY AT AROUND 80-90 WITH LITTLE BOOST UPS AS YOU DO.
MINE RUNNING STAGE ONE AT ONLY 244.5 BHP WITH A T34.

I AM ALSO USING THE HIGHER OCTANE FUEL (97)RON AS IT APPARENTLY LAST A LITTLE LONGER

when ford had the cossie in mind, one of those things as 'fuel economy' where not on the checklist. It's antique technology compared to today.
A cossie is ment for power, and power comes at a price.
the yb doesn't like high lambdas, (melting pistons and such )
and your lsd won't do much favors either qua rolling resistance
maybe fitting smaller tires and higher pressure will do some enconmy favors...

late saphs ybg cosworths runs three cats closed lambda and would run on 95 ron green top cam covers

but all cossie should be run on 97+ ron as running on anything else will result in piston being melted !!!

i have hear good things about cloosed loop lambda and coil pack conversions on cossie and they have made the car much better on fuel and much better on emissions and have also made it more responsive and benfit from a better burn to

I think fuel economy should not be a consideration when running a Cossie, It is a performance car and as such its going to burn fuel. How much fuel you use depends a lot on the condition and the spec of your car and also how you drive it. Even in standard tune they where never really economical with around 22 - 25 mpg.

Power requires fuel which in turn costs money, thats the deal!!

not necessarily, depends on how it's been mapped. you could even do some damage by using fuel with too high an octane rating as it burns slower
