got to be a 3 door shell, or a xr4i with the rear window made into one piece.

all shells were the same, except for the XR4i and the split quarters
so a 1.6L or a 2litre GL will all be the same, only the sunroofs are different from a Cossy one

The 1.6 and cosworth shells are the same except for the sunroof, some very minor tweaks were done to the shells after they were made, such as drilling a couple of holes and in the case of the rs500 chopping a corner off the battery tray, but that takes all of about 1 minute to replicate both of.

The only other difference is very early shells have a narrower opening for the gearbox at the front of the tunnel and different gearbox mounting points, but the later ones are the same.

You knew I would be along anytime soon

The production (1986 made) cosworth 3dr shell is a version on the base model 3dr one but with sheet metal changes, these are :-

bulk head has a different hole for the abs master cylinder and a strengthening plate added around it and also has an extra hole under the battery tray for the abs loom - except Ryans for some weird reason

The gearbox tunnel is wider and gearbox mounting points are revised. The rear crossmember has mounting points added for the arb

The front crossmember has a different tow hitch

The tilt slide sunroof was actually an option on the base model so there are a few around with these fitted, quite rare though

The front wings on the RHD cosworth ones have holes for indicators

The base model was not built after early 86 in RHD so none of these would have the revisions of the cosworth version unless reshelled into a replacement cosworth shell - but LHD versions after 1986 would have them as these continued to produce a non cosworth 3dr in LHD until the late 80s

Then in 1989 Ford built another batch of replacement 3dr cosworth shells and these were different again - but thats another story

I didnt really answer the main question though -yes they are different - but only evolved, so a base model can easily be used to build a replica and use cosworth running gear.

The production 3dr cosworth shell was no stronger than a base model, I looked closely at both when building my cosworth as I had a base model run around at the same time, and all the sheet metal welds were the same

If I were building a replica or track 3dr I would start with a nice rot free base model shell and avoid the cosworth tax, but if I were reshelling a production cosworth I would use the cosworth version for resale value.

We'll all sayign the same thing mate, there are some changes but they are mega easy to replicate, the basic shell is still the same, just literally a few holes for fittings etc.

i know chip-bought it off a mate this week to pull him out of the shit financially.not really got the space for it though(need your unit!),so looking to move it on quickly.plus im already fucking about with my mk2 escort trying to sort that so i can get it out on track,so not got time to do anything with it

the repaint would have cost a fortune as it was done at his works(big insurance bodyshop),in one of the booths in clear over basecoat inside and out.
also comes with fibreglass bodykit and 3x 3door alloys

the rad is 40mm and the thermostat housing is only about 35mm.i have ordered some hoses off a mk2 granada off ebay hoping to be able to make something out of them as they have correct 40mm ends for the rad.

was going to buy an alloy rad but got no money
