Doesn't automatically mean Joes better though as there are lots of examples of people having a few lessons with someone then becoming better than them. Both are great and for every Surfing Alien, Extremist, Satch boogie you have a Building the church, Juice, Tender surrender and Badhorsie.
I could name a well know band over here whos bass player taught the lead singer/guitarist his first chords but know he tunes his bass. Paul Gilbert taught Buckethead but i know who i prefer.
Kirk hammett from Metallica is another that did some lessons with Joe on scales but he hasn't spent his whole guitaring life with him. (yes i know hes not in the same league but still)
Watched a couple of youtube vids on malmsteen a few weeks ago.Think it was titled as guitar lessons,can you imagine him playing something really fast and difficult then saying to you "yeah learn that by next week okay"

Some had style and inovation some had speed or technique but all were great in their own way.
