using unsecured wifi (ipaq)
do you need some software other than the standard wireless scanner in Windows Mobile 2003 SE?
I can find and connect to a network but internet doesnt work, never done this before so have no idea!! MiniStumbler isnt compatible with my Ipaq, so do i need pocketwinc or is there something better?!

Technically ministumbler would not do a lot more than the standard wifi scanner in Windows mobile other than display more information regarding the connection as it only detects Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) using 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g it has no additional capabilitys such as the ability to sniff network packets to investigate the strength of WEP and WPA encryption keys.
To do this you need a sniffer such as pocket warrior or alternatively airscanner which is a more completed network sniffer for windows mobile

In all reality though without modifying the device you are in a bad position as the Ipaq is as good at finding networks as my goldfish is

no you require different tools for sniffing using XP.
By large the biggest issue is the hardware being used, chipset, driver for the network card and the antenna... you most certainly need a directional antenna such as the one found here

The one above is a retail version of the Pringle tube cantenna but you can build them using a variety of house hold objects

You need the right hardware (good card) and a decent cantenna before you think about it with WindowsXP
In general Linux and BSD is better at this

BTW when I mention modifying the IPAQ its simply means running Linux on it, which makes it a more usefull tool with regards to testing wireless

That is a really good thing about the IPAQ its ability to be well hacked, ive seen nearly everything running on them SNES games included
