Default Home PC build - what components ???

Right, I have an old 1Gb Pentium 4 at home which I want to upgrade, but, I don't want to spend £££'s on a PC I won't use too often.

I've already got ATX case, disks (IDE), DVD, monitor, etc... so, I am after a decent motherboard, cpu, 1Gb memory and maybe a graphics card (I already have a Sapphire Radeon AGP card I think ).

I've no interest in gaming, the only things I do with the PC are photo editing, a little video editing and that's it...

I used to build PCs in my day, but I have lost track of what is good, isn't good, what goes with what (e.g cooler for CPU), etc...

Any recommendations for components please ? Not top spec, something half decent that won't break the bank.

Many thanks

You want to be looking at a core 2 duo processor mate, fast/cheap which is right up your street isnt it

processor http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/126906
motherboard http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...uct_uid=124405
Memory http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=92879
graphics card http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119712/rb/0

All picked with your description of needs in mind

if staying on agp then deffo recomend nvida 7600gt graphics card @ around £100 even cheaper if you go to pci-e motherboard..
asus do good motherboards and have a good backup service even if you have to keep on at em for a month (now have the right email addys so that won't ever happen again )
i personally would suggest giving a ball park figure of what you are willing to spend mate as there is such a huge choice and variation...
could keep the motherboard you have now and upgrade to a faster processor , graphics card and more memory...

edit to say ... what he said above

Eagle he doesnt game so a 7600 would be a waste of money as its a gaming card.
Also i forgot to say your currant motherboard may support core 2 duo, you will have to find out the exact mobo and google it, if it does support it then you can save yourself £50.
But certainly the processor and ram will be needed, i say ram because you want the new DDR2, what you have now will be DDR

The 7300 in my link should be fine for video stuff, its still 256MB aswell.
And im not sure about the pins on the ram, all i know is if you have a old intel motherboard then it wont support DDR2 memory

GTi_iTG hit the nail right on the head with that choice of hardware. The only thing I would suggest is to swap the S3 for the DS3 as its a more solid board (all solid capacitor design) but nothing much in it really. Everything else is spot on. A 7300GT card would be more than sufficient for what is needed here or 7600GS would be more than enough to.

Thanks guys,

My motherboard won't support anything new, it's far too old.
Memory on there is mega expensive EDO 184pin DIMMs, looked into upgrading to 1Gb and that's a fortune in its own right.

I'll take a look at the links and get back to you.

Thanks
Greg
