Default Saab 9000 intercoolers

Evening all

I'm looking to get a Saab 9000 intercooler from the 2.3L Turbo for my Pulsar as a front mount IC. Does anyone know much about these in terms of their capabilities?

Or where to get one for cheap

A scrappies mate

I thought the 2.3 saabs had tiny low comp turbos in 'em? Meaning I doubt the intercoolers would be much better than what you got?

I know the old 900's had T3's.....

The Saab cooler isnt too bad, but I would think that, due to its lack of depth, that it would be restrictive.

A better bet IMO would be a 2wd Cossie Cooler.

With the turbo lag they had ?

Sure the Carlsson and 16v turbo were at least t3's .

early ones were T3 then T25, and later TD04, - my 92 Carlsson was T25, virtually no lag, full boost by 2500 rpm and rated at 220bhp, 350Nm at up to 1bar boost IIRC. Very driveable torquey engine, but runs out of puff a tad at the top end..
The intercooler is huge in area terms, same size as the rad, but probably less than 2" thick..

i had one on my 300 bhp uno turbo and the sab intercooler sweld up and i even had the ends made out off ally and it whent banngg after a littel time ohh but it was running 2.5 bar so it would be good for a pulsar coz i no that you cant run big bosst on them so you should be all right if you keep bosst to about 2. bar if that all helps goood luckk

2 bar on a Pulsar would make for a seriously quick car

A measly 0.7 is plenty enough for me

lol, cheers lads. I'm only running 0.8 bar, might stretch to 1 bar one of these days

I figure it has to be better than the top mount IC, and it's only £40 so nothing ventured...

That's one in the boot of a Metro. They are big in surface area, but only about 3cm thick. Dunno if thats a little thin...

Id not use a saab 9000 one on a pulsar, they patheticly thin, i bet itd do a worse job than the std top mounter, which in all honesty isnt that bad, and pretty big

ROFL@ "2.5bar on an uno turbo so 2bar on a pulsar" tho

Just found it on a handy little page with loads off different IC's on it with their dimensions.

The sunny top mount intercooler returned some pretty impressive temperature drops why not just take it and locate IT at the front of your car?

The saab intercooler has a good quality core and a good surface area.. the only issue with these is the plastic tanks - they are only designed for low pressure turbo's and you will blow the end's off!! I have replaced literally hundreds of these with all alloy versions over the years.. would be a good learning exercise tho- and maybe a good stop gap for now..

So they arent restrictive in terms of it being so thin?

Getting alloy end tanks would hopefully not be too much of a problem

THEY VAVE QUITE A BIG CORE STACK HEIGHT SO THE FLOW WILL BE QUITE GOOD.
IF YOU GET IT TO FIT AND YOU NEED AN UP GRADE, ABBOTT RACING DO AN ALL ALLOY VERSION WITH A 40MM THICK CORE.

Mmmm, but for how much

Does sound promising however. Huge, and not restrictive. Does sound like a decent upgrade!

Mmm, £595 for Abbots Intercooler. See this is where tuning companies go wrong in life charging silly money for what is effectivly a simple unit. So thats £30-40 for a standard unit or £600 for the model that offers 10bhp more...

There's a Ford RS500 IC going for half that on Ebay...

Anyone know what power or whatever these saab ones become restrictive at? Seems madness going for one without knowing, esp as they patheticly wafer thin.

Not really the shape of the bumper cutout either.

Id rather not cut so many corners, and just buy a second hand early EVO or R32GTR intercooler, neither will cost you more than a hundred and summat quid, nice n thick, deffo not restrictive, and fit in the bumper cutout better.

I honestly dont belive a Saab 9000 cooler will be better than the std one in the std place.

Very early Pace Pulsar front mount coolers are far thicker than the Saab ones but about the same shape, and they actually worse than standard, i know that for a fact.

(R32GTR ones are good for 650bhp, they used the std ones on the GrpA cars. I sold mine for about 120quid if i remember right)
