Default Are you " green " ?

Been thinking about this recently as seems there is a lot of campaigns on to help combat the effects of global warming etc.

Theres a massive landfill near us, where Lee's dad works, and they reckon itll last for another 20 years it looks vile, and stinks as you drive past, surely landfil is gonna run out a lot sooner than later?

I make much more of an effort to recycle than i used to, we recycle all tins and glass and papers, though still awaiting the plastic recycling bags from our council, and i do use mainly power saving lightbulbs, i switch all plugs off when not in use and never leave things on standby, though there are so many more things we could probably do to help the environment

How " green " are you? Does it bother you that we have global warming? im quite undecided, although most people seem to think itll be a good thing we are having warmer summers and milder winters, how much will it affect us in the long run is what id like to know?

I do worry what the world will be like in about 50 years time though....

you say that but on the flipside... the amount of kids with asthma/allergies etc compared to 20yrs ago, the fact the sea levels are rising, does it not worry you in the slightest

We are forced to recycle at home. Our bins only get collected once a fortnight Then on middle weeks they collect recycling stuff - cans, tins, bottles, jars, papers, magazines.

Its something i'd never have done before so yes its a good thing. Annoying though when the recycling gestapo leave a bottle in the recycling bin because you forgot to remove the lid

How often does everyone else get rubbish collected?

The whole athsma thing is down to our poor diets apparently. Scotland is basically a big hill.... Sea would need to come up a fair bit!

But remember, our entire nation could become totally green, we could all switch off our tellys and move into tee-pees in fields and eat bark or something and it wouldn't even make up for the rise in emmisions from China, India and Brazil.

So, until they stop polluting, then whats the point in us all stopping our lives to create less carbon............

PLUS, the USA is still pumping the greatest proportion of CO2 into the atmosphere. The planet is fucked. In 100 years it will fix itself by killing everything on it and starting again.

Not alot we can do to change that I don't think

We do our bit.

Put in a new high efficiency boiler not so long ago, also re-insulated the loft and also the cavity walls, new windows are in the pipeline and also a solar panel on the roof for our hot water.

Have changed all the bulbs that I possibly can for energy efficient ones and we turn off everything at night.

We separate all our rubbish as well only takes a few minutes.

To be fair our council (South Lanarkshire) and the Scottish Energy Trust has been very helpful with info and helped also with applying for grants that the Scottish Executive have made avaliable.

Should also check with your energy supplier as many of these offer discount etc. We're with Scottish Hydro Electric and they offer quite a lot of discounts on things like lightbulbs, insulation etc.

TBH I think some areas of the country are better than others as my aunt who lives down south can hardly get any help or info from her council.

not especially green... but i try to recycle etc and am currently working on reducing my work's carbon footprint using various power saving techniques.

as far as the landfill goes, i reckon we should fill it up as fast as we can... pile it good and high!!!
At the rate we're told the ice caps are melting we'll need all that to build on because everything else will be below sea level!

ashamed to say I was watching corrie last night - but there was a classic line on it... the ginger kid was doing some home work about global warming and was telling some rough bird working in the cafe that if we didn't do something about it the temperature and the sea levels would rise.... she says something like "so in a few years we could be living by the sea and it'll be really hot, and you want me to stop this???"

China builds one new COAL fired power station a WEEK, very green.
The yanks are aresholes when it comes to climate as seen at KYOTO etc, I have yet to meet a yank that does not leave their car running at least 20 minutes before driving off, either it's to cool it down(air con) or warm it up(winter), we as a nation contribute less than 2% of the worlds pollutionm yet get this stuffed down our necks, and it all costs.
Christ the yanks even have drive in churches, on base a drive in video shop, food place etc, no wonder a lot are a heart attack looking for a place to happen, brits are getting bad as well.
I use the park and ride(ace idea IMO) and can't get my head around the sign at the exit, "THANK YOU FOR HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT" etc etc, while they leave the bus engines running all the time when stopped for 15 minutes at each end.
Global warming is NOT NEW, it has occured many many times throughout history, as has global cooling(ice age) but I blame global warming on the dinosaurs for being lazy and driving everywhere, instead of walking, I mean when was the last time you saw a dinosaur WALK to maccy d's ?
They try to force people to buy newer greener cars, the polution it creates in their nanufacture is not thought about.
Public transport in this country is expensive, I asked for a ticket for two adults 1 child from thetford to london Ł187, I can drive there + back for less than Ł20.

ps rant over for now.

All this sorting out tins/cans/glass etc is a complete waste of time...

The firm i just left has a contract with westminster council, camden council and brent council and all the glass/cans/paper/tins whatever that would come in all in seperate motors would get 9 times out of 10 slung into one big bay and go to landfill

In fact the glass used to be very handy when loading a lorry and the load was fairly light as a bucket of glass takes up no room at all and weighs 6-10 ton

We get 2 week collections but we have no bin for recycling cardboard

So we have to save it up and DRIVE to the nearest recycle centre, which in itself is ok untill they start charging us per mile to drive

Also humans only contribute to
4% of the total CO2 in the world so if we stopped producing co2 completly we could not affect the other 96%

I dont do recycling, as we just have normal black bin collections and i dont think bus drivers will appreciate me getting on the bus with loads of recycling

Only green things i do,
is do the washing at 30 degrees
Turn all lights/electrical appliances of when not in use
Keep doors shut in the house
Have a save a flush bag in each of the toilets

Appliances like TV's, Microwaves, videos, dvd players, hi fi systems cost a huge amount to run. Most of the energy saving issues are simply solved.
