Just fitted a oil presure gauge to my saffy to find it has 55 psi cold and about 32 psi when hot and presume this is not good can anyone tell what it should be sounds like a bag of spanners

 

Manual states: 1.8 BAR@850RPM, 2.4BAR@2000RPM.
This is minimum when hot 80C on 20W/50 oil.
So yours is ok, cold does not really matter so much, HOT is when it needs to be measured.

Worth mentioning what oil you are using too ellicos!

can't rememebr wehre i've read it recently but there is an oil which is supposed to be the dogs for not breaking down

but those figures seem ok to me for a standard pump
the pressure will be lower when it's hot but are you measureing it at idle or are you measuring it with a little bit of load on as the resluts can vary by as much as 50% between the 2

 

AMSOIL did a lot of research recently, on oils.
Some expensive ones were a joke performance wise.
part of their tests were done over 400,000 MILES in a semi(artic), and showed wear to be within NEW tolerances.
They also tested taxis, over a two year period, some other owners reported up to 5mpg better.
The test really was independant, and over years with different cars trucks buses etc, so pretty much all variables.
One thing that did come to light was needless waste of oil being changed too early, they went on to recommend every 25,000 MILES between changes.
