Yep the figures used to give stopping distances were taken from a Ford Anglia. Jeremy Clarkson did a stopping distanc thing with a Focus a Range Rover and a Ford Anglia. Both the lardy 4x4 and Focus stopped well under the alleged stopping distance. What was concerning was the anglia went past the marker it was sposed to stop at

if my 'math'
is correct (with i very much doubt @70mph you would have to stop in 3.06 seconds to get to zero after 96m.
doesnt seem THAT far off to me
although its hard to imagine just 'how quick' you stop

phil, your maths is wrong becasue youre not working out the fact that as youre braking the car is decelerating and hence covering less distance
True enough the braking distances are not accurate but for safety's sake I don't think that there is much point in changing them. Think about the number of folk you see that are right up the back of someone or worse yourself. It's a really dangerous and annoying habit, especially when it's pissing down, which it invariably is in this country!

From: Macclesfield - you'll never leave....!
well for example..... an evo 6 will go from 60 to 0 in just over 2 seconds , and someone do the calcs... is well below 96 m. but if you read the highway code carfully it does say these are the "safe recommended" distances - if everyone obided by the,m - i recokon there would never be anohter motorway pile up again
I think the problem is that by revising the figures and telling people you can now stop in say 70m rather than 100m may mean that some people drive faster or brake later - so keeping the figures the same may be an added safety margin. Same reason why the 70mph limit doesnt go uo even though cars can brake and handle better.

I think you will find the test Clarkson did a while ago was with a porker 911, pug 106 gti and a range rover, the pug stopped in the shortest distance (very light weight car) around just over half the distance, The porker was next a few feet away where as the range rover just mananged to do it in the distance stated in the higway code.
If you think some 2ton 4x4 with wide knobbly tires and a contact patch that is more suited to going through mud, than accelerating and braking is going to stop in a nice short distance, then I hope you don't have one sitting up your backside when you unleash the power of your ap 6pots.

Right please have a read.
Last week I went on a speed awareness course.
Clarkson has indeed done the test and proved the stopping distances to be fairly accurate, much to my suprise. A driving instructor I know also takes great pleasure in telling me this.
The course I went on put it down to todays living, they say YES cars stop quicker no problem.
But in todays world we have too many things going on in our lives, we pay less attention to the road we have kids in the car, loud stereo's on ABS ete et etc... The list is endless.
They said your reaction time goes up and therefore overall stopping distance and then showed some videos and graphics and I am quite happy that its true.
Jim, if you try and stop from a set distance and you know its coming up you will stop quicker- esp if u have anything about you in the driving dept. THis is because you're expecting to have tobrake and are ready for it. However thats not what Highway code stopping distances are about. They are include thinking/reaction time.
Hope this helps
