Default Buying Stuff from abroad - Whos been hit with charges ?

I've been a user of e-bay now for about 7 years and have bought stuff from all over the world and never had any problems with import duty.

Well I bought a second hand bellhousing a couple of weeks ago from the States and it got impounded and there is £12.00 VAT to pay on it.

I bought some release bearings from Australia the week before and they got trapped, again for around £12.00 VAT

Now the shit thing is... Parcel Farce also want to charge £8 for paying the fee to Customs for you.

Now I dont know if its me getting paranoid or its some deliberate ploy to discourage people buying from places like the US where the pound is so strong at the moment.

I also think what the fook are the government doing chasing £12 of VAT from an individual, surely it will cost more to process the paperwork and therefore as a tax payer its costing me money.

Has anyone else had stuff caught up recently ?

mark the package up as "gift" and it doesn't get charged

or tell them that you are sending it over as a resto job if it's an engine or other big bits of mechanicals
