Default Problem with brakes failure - provisionally solved

Someone recently had the above - both yellow and red lights on, and pump completely switched off - probably an electrical fix (ie relays)

Cant find the thread!

Anyone recall this?

JJ

*UPDATE* Problem provisionally solved - replaced relay under dash, and all appears well again.

To add,

On the cos last night, yellow light and red light came on. Braking fine for a while, and eventually lost all braking.

Noted when turning engine off then back to key position 2, the brake pump was not charging.

Looked at relays behind glove box, and after a fiddle, the pump on retest started to work again. I am thinking electrical. Does this sound like a dodgy relay to anyone?

Ive had it happen to me, but without the yellow lights on.
Lost power to the eletric servo it felt like, but ive been unable to find out why and its never done it again since.

I am thinking that it must be a dodgy relay. Fortunately, mine is currently suffering from complete failure, and therefore will need to be addressed.

I thought maybe a burnt out pump, but given that it suddenly started working again (albeit briefly!) that makes me think relay.

I happen to have a set of spare relays, so I will swap them all and see if the prob goes away.

I am sure I saw a post on this recently, but I am absolutley buggered if I can find it!

Zippyobrien, they don't have servo's as such but a pressure accumlator to do the same job, looks like a sphere like on a citroen suspension system, ans stores pressurised fluid there pressure being produced by the pump.
This takes the place of the servo asistance, as there is not enough room for a packet of fags let alone a whacking great servo!!

LOL - I like your thinking! Sounds like the way forward. Of course then I would probably end up mis-biassing the brakes, and crashing the fooking thing!

thats why you test them on an empty bit of road before doing a trackday lol

saying that, we had a Fez ST group N rally car last year, on the road the brakes were pretty good, and at brunters during a top speed effort i was leaving the braking later and later, and being a rally car it had a lot of rear bias but i had wound on a fair bit of front...

but i still managed to lock up the rear end at 120

foooooking shat myself as the grass bit was approaching fast, and i was 90 degrees tot he direction of travel lol

god know what happened but the car straightened up and i didnt die

Hi matey - good news is that I appear to have sorted it. I used one of my spare relays to replace one of the abs relays and it sprang into life! Hurrah!

Must be getting to that age when all the bits break! LOL

We should meet for a beer though if you fancy it? (just the one you understand)

Dan - 120 mph rear lock up sounds like fun! And also sounds like the thing I would end up doing! LOL

Lets see how long it works for this time!

Replace the fuse as well - was it the purple relay you replaced and was it new? I had exactly the same problem, except the relay was broken AND the fuse had melted - ended up cutting it out and fitting a new fuse holder.

Hi mate - I will replace fuse as well - good advice!

It was indeed the purple badger that was replaced - all seems well now.

it could also be that the brake fluid is getting too hot
do you have a sheild around it?

when i had the same problem with my tt it always used to be because i was giving it plenty of welly, not really when you want the rbakes to fail but opening the bonnet and letting it cool down for 15 minutes turned the light off again

ended up having 5 layers of heat sheilding around the pump before it stopped doing it

Hi matey

No it was definately the relay - as soon as the relay was replaced it instantly started working again - connectors all looked to be in good order. Also, heat shield is present and correct.

Since the relay has been changed, it has been faultless.

Hurrah!
