I think the one on the passat is dead. There's a rattle and its not the engine. If I hold the first silencer/cat bit of the exhaust in the engine bay it seems to stop so I think something is rattling inside. Apart from this the exhaust seems nice and tight so I don't think it's knocking anything external to it.

It also drives absolutely fine apart from this.

Do cat's disintergrate? - if so I would have thought it would have made its way out the back by now as its been going on for a week now and getting a bit louder.

 

Is it a diesel or petrol?

If its a diesel, pull the cat off, poke a broom handle in, empty it out and refit - perfectly legal

 

the cat is similar to a honey comb,very brittle.if it gets contaminated it will crumble and start to rattle.it might be caused by a impact,but you need to get the emmisions checked.

 

they crumble due to age and being hit on things...

the do def rattle when they fail - the next step is it will block the exh and you'll find a huge drop in performance!

check your fueling as if theres a miss or lambda fucked it will destroy the cat

get me they year, engine size and engine code and ill price one up for you monday,,,, be muchos cheep too if i can
