i guess anything as long as you can rotate it fast enough.

it wouldnt run at idle though.

why would you want to do it? lack of space?

Lack of space would be the only reason, yeah.

Anything that rotates would work in a fashion, but stuck in traffic with rad fans on would drain the battery quickly. Better remember to switch the engine off when stationery

I'd go for the prop as it moves around less that other drive shafts...

But as said you will only charge when driving above a certain speed LOL

doesn't have to be driven from the front of the engine. there are many production engines that have one accessory behind another driven by a straight through shaft.

how about the input shaft of the gearbox? or mounted similarly to the starter motor and driven by the flywheel ring gear (although that would be bloody fast )

or you do away with the alternator all together and use solar panels

Get rid of the usual pulley & stick one of those mouse wheels on it & employ a couple of mice on a rota system....job done!!!

remember seeing a brown 3 door in holland with the transmission tunnel cut into for this. Believe the reasoning was to put less immediate work on the engine, car was a track/strip car. Obviousley you dont get anything for nothing and the engine would still somewhere down the line be creating energy to drive the alternator just it would be geared up through the gearbox. Dont think this particular car needed it for space saving as the engine had been moved back already (unless cossie alternator is on rear, not sure, only played with cvh's).
