Default Thermostat questions

On a 4x4 cos is the purpose to of the Thermostat to warm the system up quickly for the internal heater matrix on colder days?

..and when we say the thermostat opens what is actually happening does that brass bit in the middle push out or pull in?

I understand Rally cars don't use stats is there any reason why a road car can't other then the water taking longer to warm up and creature comforts?

finally does anyone have a flow diagram of the water on a 4x4 Cos engine?

Not too sure on what you are asking but I've been told a 4x4 cos must have the thermostat in place, its not good if it don't,

using an engine with no stat promotes hot spots within the engine, and could lead to other issues ..

well thats what i was told when i asked

It's a spring! When the water gets above a certain tempurature/pressure it opens allowing water to flow to the radiator more freely

If u don't have one it can be very difficult to have warm air on the blowers and the engine water remains very cold.. (About 60-70c)

Reason I'm asking is because I have Grp-A Thermostat housing which doesn't use a stat and has the bypass welded up

inside the housing

other side

Without the stat and the bypass welded up I'm theorising that this forces all the water to circulate through the rad? can anyone confirm?
Without the bypass welded up I could see hot spots being a potential problem?

Again not sure on oil, but if you take out the stat in a car it runs cool (older vehicles) ie mk 2 escort so I would imagine its purpose is an element of creature comfort as cool runnings mean heater works cack, not good in winter
