Call to put brakes on boy racer menace
May 9 2007
By Mark Cowan, Birmingham Mail
POLICE are seeking a change in the law to make it easier to seize cars used in illegal road races.
Crowds of up to 1,000 regularly gather in the city to show off high performance cars, perform stunts and race each other.
The weekend meetings have for years blighted the lives of residents in Bordesley fed up with cars tearing up and down their streets.
While police have the power to seize vehicles, it was claimed that the current law was so cumbersome it was difficult to implement.
Currently, boy racers can only have their vehicle seized if they have previously been warned by cops who have seen them driving carelessly and are then seen ignoring the warning.
John Hemming
John Hemming MP said the law should be made easier for police to target yob drivers and he was working with police to see how he could help.
"We have legislation that is not really that workable," said the Yardley Lib Dem MP.
"It is unduly complicated for what is not only dangerous but has resulted in the deaths of people.
"It should be easier to seize vehicles and I am looking at how I can help do that. I'm going to have a further meeting with police about the issue."
Sgt Phil Comerford, from the Stechford Road Policing Unit, said road humps were planned for nearby Landor Street.
"If we can get to a situation where we can seize their pride and joy if they gather in an anti-social way it may provide a long-term answer to solving the problem," he added.

to be absolutely fair to the police though, it is verging on insane at times down there!!
the long strip alongside 'Birmingham Wheels' regularly sees cars at about 100mph overtaking each other, with cars coming the other way.
It's very exciting but also very very dangerous to watch.
It wouldn't be so bad if it were just car enthusiasts going, but there seems to always be at least 1 or 2 stolen cars getting completely nailed without any care for other cars.

1 or 2
I used to hang about with the wrong element up there as it is often safer - because it can get PROPER shady....
1 or 2 left running at the end of the night.
With the powers of seizure in my opinion it just isn't worth going anywhere near the place- I got a warning at Bassetts pole (letter through the post etc) when I once went up in my Mondeo TDCi LX with 2 wheel trims missing.

Dont speak to anyone anymore... dont see anyone anymore....
But as for do they nick Evo's and CTR's.... I think most car thieves do... dont they??
It gets mental down there some nights, seriously dangerous in places. Not sure where it is but on one of the roads I've seen people doing 3 point turns at the bottom to go back up.
i used to go down every sat night havnt been for about 5 years now
my mates still go up but more fool them i think
it is crazy up there especially wheels straight as you come into wheels on that sharp bend
i seen a scooby and corsa head on there
scooby came into wheels like a rocket and the corsa wasnt hanging around either
ive seen people who smashed into the back of someone and then get dragged out there car to be taken away
cars set a lite if they break down aswell and left
its calmed down though from a the old days
now the police are geting involved more and more as before the riot vans would be beaten until they go away
