Then you have a very substantial loom fault if you're adoment the fuse is ok.

For arguments sake i would change that fuse for a different one though, they aren't always visibly blown.

That's what I have done, which is why I said checked and re-checked, I realise it is probably a problem with the loom, hence the question where does it get it's power from.

Where do I start looking? It may be a broken wire, it may be a bad earth. I know it is not a fuse as I have checked and swapped.

I will take dash out tonight and get in about it. What I need is some advice as to where to start looking.

Cheers

To be honest it sounds like the loom has had some rough treatment and has broken one of the internal crimps in the loom where it splits off to various items.

What number fuse have you checked just out of interest?

Cant remember off the top of my head where it'll be your just guna have to strip the loom down and chase the wire through.

Do you not believe me?

I don't know which fuse it was as it was sunday when I done it and I'm at work just now, but TRUST me I DO NOT have a blown fuse.

Back to the question, can anyone point me in right direction as to where to look as I really don't have a lot of time to spend on this. Could do without spending 2 hours taking out dashboards and the likes when I could simply have went straight to the problem area.

I take it the wires come down the drivers side pillar and into the drivers footwell and join up with something there.

The loom for the overhead light and clock comes off the loom in the drivers footwell above the speaker there. The feed for the stereo comes off the loom inside the car behind the dash. Will be a nightmare job to find this without removing the dash 1st.But once you get a clear view/working area its fairly easy to identify what parts of the loom go where! All the best,Micky

Cheers Micky, I'll get the dash out tonight, won't take me long as I've done it a few times before. Pain in the arse tho as I've just got the car ready for summer and then this.

Thats where there are visible but they all route back to a common point in the loom, and you'll probably also find you've lost your cigarette lighter, fuel computer, luggage compartment light and also some features of the instruments.

It's an S1 Ive got so no Fuel Comp or luggage light. Everything else still works inc lighter, that's why I'm baffled tbh. I can only think of a break in the wire or similar.

Will have a look tonight

Have you checked the feed and supply from both sides of the fuse before ripping the dash out ?

[Stands back and waits for the abuse ]

Just buzz it all through with a multimeter to simply find the problem.

Good Luck - Safechav was only trying to help

I know he was, I was only on the wind up. I'm fairly competent - I wouldn't come on here without first having checked simple things like fuses etc.

Anyhow, got it working now, began process of removing dash and just happened to look up at clock and it was on.

Seems there must be a break in wire or bad connection as when I move wires the clock sometimes goes off, then comes back on again. I'm just in for a bite to eat then going back out and I'll check all connections and if need be replace some wiring.

No radio not yet got permanent live. Radio works at the moment off the switched live. I need a permanent live for it to remember presets etc.

Did S1's come with permanent live as OE stereo wouldn't need it? May need to find one if not.

Deffo was not a fuse fuxake.

Am goin back out now, will let ye's know how I get on.

As ive said then.........that loom has obviously had some rough treatment and the internal crimp where that fused live splits off to the various parts of the loom has broken.

I had an earth one go on me on a previous car and i was fucking going mad over that cos things kept working intermittently, it got to the stage i was sat there wiggling wires and then cutting them to see if it was the wire causing the problem (yes i cut a lot of wires which didnt need to be cut ) - and as i say in the end it was a common earth point in the loom and the factory crimp has let go

Nope, can't find anything.

Clock still goes off if I wiggle the wires around. Have now tie wrapped them in position and all seems to be working. Have took a permanent live from the large multiplug under the centre speaker cover which has sorted my headunit for now as I can't see an original.

Too nice a day and can't be arsed doing any more.

Tomorrow - Central Locking so stay tuned

There has to be an internal break.

Mk3 Escorts don't have a permenant stereo feed because they had analogue radio's.......

That's what dawned on me as I was working away this morning. I've put a spade connector on the end of the wire connected to the Stereo and pushed it into a permanent live position on that large multiplug attached to bulkhead under centre speaker cover. Only place I could easily get a permanent live from that I could see.

What do you think?

Will I wake up to a pile of ashes in morning?

From what i remember that live is shared down with the fag lighter and so on, i did it on my old Orion, i was jubious about connectiong a 10A stereo into the circuit aswell but it never set on fire, but realistically it could be pushing the wirings limits.

Up to you if you want to run it like that or for example run a new feed or upgrade to thicker wiring.
