Default Why are the old bill using silver cars - think i know

As above

Why are the bill old going for silver motors. The more i look around the more i see the old bill in silver motors.

My two thoughts on the subject are:

1. The resale values are more?
2. They are not as easy to spot when following you?

Anyone have any knowledge behind this?

Most of the silver cars I have seen are Metropolitan cars. Can't recall any from Hants, Berks or Dorset that I saw.

Probably is something to do with resale if they are buying up more for the city.

I was working down in essex last week (Basildon to be exact, lovely place ) and saw a couple of silver police cars and though hmm thats weird, not seen any up here.

Another thing that gets me, why do police always seem to have 5 series tourers and range rover vogues? Surely there's plenty of fast cars they can have that are much cheaper? Or again is that down resale as they tend to hold their value better than saw a Mondeo ST220 estate/V6 vectra or similar?

Saw a police Evo when i was down in Essex too, bloody awesome looking thing Is it the A176 that takes you to Basildon from the M25, signposted Southend?? It flew past me going along there!

Champagne Avensis estate, Skoda Octavia derv, Focus's, Astras, Scoobs.. all sorts!

humberside has plenty of unmarked cars now. they might even be using 330 BMW's (they have a marked 330 that follows a marked scooby).

And yea, silver for resale lol.

i'm sure i read a few years back that they were all slowly introducing silver instead of white because they were EASIER to see/spot - now i can't remember whether they were on about day time or night time driving PLUS i could be getting confused with the big blue and yellow squares that a lot seem to have on the sides now

Silver is the new White now.

My boss has been buying silver vans and cars for about 4 years now, if he is buying silver it must be the same price as white used to be. Silver would have previously been a extra cost for a fleet vehicle.

Has nobody noticed it's Silver Van man now and not White Van man.?

Silver police cars are everywhere I go.

Its defo for the resale value... Apparently due to white being not that popular they had to pay extra for the cars to be painted white.. Well thats what transport OCU told me... What dont make sense is that BMW offered the met an entire BM fleet which would be cheaper than the current Vauxhall fleet, but the Met turned it down saying that the public would perceive it as that they are spending all the tax payers hard earned on motors and not police.

They got white and Silver round here, and a few other colours.

Silver Scooby n Octavia RSs, White Mecredes (slammed on the deck too, no modifications my ass ), and silver marked AND unmarked V8 BMW X5s.

And the Merc Vito pig vans round here are pale YELLOW, not white or silver...

They have some right fucking expensive pig mobiles round here...

Just not the modified FQ Evo as they wrote it off Thats wasnt white either tho

We've just had a white BMW delivered, a 530D. Not seen it yet but it is striped up. Am led to belive its an auto.

Also got a striped up silver VRS, looks crap but a great car, a plain silver Volvo, fast in a straight line, crap brakes, crap handling.

Still got a silver striped up ST220, crap in a straight line but great handling, great brakes.

Silver were issued as they are supposed to be better resale but also better to see than white!

We had also got a scooby lined up, there is a big importer of scoobies on the patch and he said help yourself lads. So we picked the top spec one!

Only problem was our chief constable got wind and basically said that scoobies portray the wrong image to the public, we would appear 'boy racers' so he stopped that one dead.

Senior managment are right kill joys.... All our best cars are at driving school ..you go up there and they are all minters, even the W reg motors..come onto borough and 55 reg motors are absolutely fooked.

The best one I saw was City Police's Smart Car....we would wait for them outside Bishopsgate nick just to take the piss out of them..haha

What model Volvo is that? I've used S60 and V70 and thought they were both fine motors.

Silver is still a cost option but any fleet negotiator willing to commit to a few vehicles from one manufacturer should be able to get it FOC.

I've seen that before - where I've supplied "expensive" BMWs at lower cost than "cheap" Rover, Ford, Vauxhall. Many companies have a similar policy because perception is everything. That applies the other way too - how many still think the BMW 3 series is "exclusive" - even though it has outsold Mondeo in the UK for about 5 years now!!!

i think this resale thing is bollocks. maybe they were thinking that, but if you're going to buy a three year old, three hundred thousand mile car, you won't care what colour it is...

As above the main reason is resale.

The other is reliability! As said previously these cars live on the roads. The days of undercover cars being Rover 800s are thankfully long gone.

Traffic cars have surprisingly low mileage. Between the time spent being parked up operating speed traps, in the bodyshop getting repairs done, and in the garage with no crews because they are all in court hanging around to give evidence, they don't get a chance to drive around that much.

Rad, i must be a geek then....

I saw a silver merc earlier on the motorway and i think they are defintely harder to spot.

The blue lights on the roof kinda give it away when they are close.

Maybe i will simply have to reprogramme my brain to think about silver police cars and not white ones in future.

We're going over to the 335 new diesels, just ordered a shed load to replace the Volvo's as they are cheaper.

We've also got Skodas and Focus ST's on the traffic department.
