Interesting drive to work, think i have blown the S1 up
I had an iteresting drive into work this morning in the S1, i had to use it as i was at the Kent RSOC meeting last night and it would have woken to many people up to change cars around late last night.
Anyway, driving along nice steady 85 mph, pull out to overtake, gently start accelerating and notice a small amount of smoke out of the back, thought hmmm so back off slightly, then looked behind, all you could see was a smoke screen
covered the road completely, carried on going and all returned to normal, oil pressure fine, temperatures normal etc..
pulled away at a junction and again loads of smoke, OK i thought perhaps the turbo has blown, i have had this before so thought as long as i keep it off boost as much as possible and keep an eye on my oil pressure things will be fine, i could get it to work, then organise a way to get it home.
Got to a small incline and yet more smoke, and was running on three cylinders, and oil pressure was all over the place, looked one second 90, looked again 5
finally made it to work after creating so many smoke screens its unreal, i am sure the people of Cambridge loved me this morning.
parked up, on idle it revs to 3500, smokes heavilly, rattles like fook. popped the bonnet oil every fooking where
What you all reckon, i think i have melted a piston, will now more once i finish work and whip the plugs out. It was going to happen the moment i put the car back together. I dont mind, its just that i have driven it harder for longer so many times before, christ i went all the way to Kent and southend in it, doing a steady 95 all the way, and over taking and having a little play occasionally. Seems odd that it done it whilst driving so slowly, could be a fault with a sensor i suppose.
That will be a new engine now then. This time the engine will be my final spec engine, so its not a bad thing that its gone pop.
edited to add that the car is on Cossie Managment, changed to this becaus ei didnt want to melt my engine
lol

Was you up and down the high street in Newmarket last week ?
Saw a nice S1 cruising along several times, whilst I was in the pub
Head gasket at least, turbo if your lucky, or engine popped if you have bad luck. Whip the head off. All the oil in the engine bay - where does it look like its come from ????

i know how you feel mate, i was on my way home from croft, but with my S2 there was no warning, just a one big bang, oil and water all over the road, i have now got a hole in my block big enough to get my hand in
so it is rebuild time for me too, damn rs's - good luck with the build mate

Yeh i know i should have stopped
but i thought it was only the turbo, hence why i cook for a living and not diagnose cars
Anyway its only a RST, its not as if the engines are that expensive, besides this engine was my standard engine, that i was only carrying on with until it went bang, then i was going to build the low comp engine, just means i have to bring the build on quicker than i first thought.
It wasnt bad, the engine kept good oil pressure so i wasnt convinced that it was serious
I am 99% sure the oil in the engine bay has come from the oil filler cap having blown off, why has it blown off i couldnt tell ya, thats what you guys are for
As for head gasket, the smoke was all BLUE, not white and that wouldnt have made the oil cap pop off?
The car is only on a base running in map, hence why i was taking it easy anyway, which makes me think it was a sensor failure which caused mechanical failure as opposed to pure mechanical shit hit the fan breakdown. And Karl the base map is form yours and Dingy's best mapping mate Ah....med

Scott, gutted for you mate, your car looked/sounded the bollox @ the cambs meet last week
Hope it is nothing too serious
Afetr cleaning all the oil out of the engine bay
i have now found what caused the engine to melt, the vaccume hose that goes to the 3bar map sensor has come off
which i guess is why it done it at 80-85 mph, as i wasnt giving it death, as it wasnt fully mapped.
I now need a new engine, as this one has started smoking
when it was re-built it was re-bored to .5 oversize, which means i wont be able to have it done again.
If anyone knows where there is a 100% complete original engine, prefer S1, can be tired or high mileage, but must be un touched, and NEVER had a re-build.

I was only doing 80-85 mph tops, and it was running only 6psi boost. Just to clear up any confusion.
It was only running base map, as the car has only just been put back together after being off the road for 2 - 3 years, the engine was re-built over 45,000 miles ago, but used the base map to put some mileage on the whole car, as it had new suspension, engine management, and a few other mods. And i wanted it to be all running with no teething problems before it was mapped. As i was told for an engine mapper to have to sort minor problems out first on a car that is "suppose" to be ready, is a major pain in the ass
so thought i would make 100% sure mine was OK first.
As it turned out i had an intermitant fault which caused the car to "die" with no warning what so ever, which was dodgy plug connections on the phase sensor. And it had a sticky starter motor, both of which would not have shown up if i hadnt put some mileage on it.

you can have your existing block re-bored further... ie by another .5mm you will end up with a 1mm oversize bore.. unfortunately mahle dont do pistons to fit this however cosworth do and so do accralite
