Default A brief explanation of the changes to TAX on cars

Hi people

To ellay some confusion over the new rates of Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax), I thought I would briefly summarise the main issues.

1. If your car says cosworth, relax, you aint gonna get stung. That said, the pre 2001 rate is likely to increase as a minimum with inflation. This means that 12 months will prob increase to about £190 odd.

2. The above rule applies to all pre 2001 cars.

3. The band G which the Chancellor is talking about only relates to vehicles registered after March 2006. As such, anything before that in the uppermost rating band will still be only band F (EG SL55 AMG on a 2004 plate).

So, If you have a car in Band F, there it will stay, and you will be subject to an additional £10 in tax per year.

If you are unfortunate to have a Band G car, then bend over, because you are his primary target. This is the band that is likely to rise to £400 in the long term.

In a nutshell, if you are gonna buy a big engined car just second hand, make sure it is a 2005 or older model!

There are some tax breaks at the other end of the scale, but I couldnt give a shit, as I have absolutely no intention of buying a sewing machine.

Hope this helps

JJ

Only an extra tenner! If you are band F, you are band F only!

check band G!!

G** > 225 g/km £210 Jaguar X type 2.0 petrol saloon auto (239 g/km)
Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 3.6 litre petrol (269 g/km)
Renault Espace 2 litre petrol (229 g/km)

Funny looking "Gas Guzzling 4x4's" aren't they?

Congrads to all you "green" wierdos!! you asked for increased taxes for "gas guzzling" cars, you have just been handed the governments answer,

So if you own a people carrier or a bmw 3 series or similar, you have just shot yourself in the foot

What makes me laugh like fuck is that you can tax a 2004 SL65 (6.5L V12 twin turbo) car for less than a brand new Renault Espace!!!! fucking PMSL

I'll stick with my 5.0 liter Mustang, ditch the CATs, shove a blower under the bonnet and shove 2 fingers up to the greens!

Yup - as above. All three are almost certainly Band F, and as such will be subject to an additional tenner each.

As per usual, Gareth!

I seem to have found a way to never benefit from any kind of tax break, and also be screwed in every single fuckiing way!

Normal married couple, no kids, and have cars.

Thank fuck I gave up smoking!

Agreed.

Interestingly, if you analyse the structure, the goverment still seem to use the economic model based on everyone buying new cars!

In effect, the policies now wont make a significant dent for 20years, when the older cars are off the road.

And think of all that money they get to waste on the shit Schools, and whatever else it pays for!

Me Too The Charger is 6.2 & ROAD TAX EXEMPT

If you stood behind it for 10 mins on tick over you would get CO poisoning.

This is just going to stop some people from buying new cars, so the only thing it will do is stick the knife in to the already struggling automotive industry . Good call Gordon . Mind you, should put the value of all second hand cars up that are registered before 23 March 2006 .

Mike do you think it will make a difference to the automotive industry? I dont personally as we are only one country out of many others which buy cars. Might harm home dealers.... but tbh i dont think it will that much

I believe the UK is one of the key global markets, so it would certainly be a twist of the knife for companies that are already struggling .

In a few years all new cars will be "sewing machines" as JJ calls them .

What i find hard to understand.

Gordon (bless him) is trying in his own special way reduce CO by...pricing out the "big gas guzzlers".

Ok, if this is his true goal to reduce CO levels, then surely he should apply to all vehicles. Even a 10-20 yr old pop-bang fiesta will produce CO, so why reduce its (and other cars) road tax?

Or am i being really cynical and wondering if he is just after my flippin MONEY!

I cant believe JJ's comment about an SL being cheaper than an espace...worlds going mad!

Because these vehicles emmissions when they were new is unknown, so they cannot tax these cars on the same sliding scale. Only ones from the date where it was a legal requirement for the manufacturers to provide this information.
