Jason, I haven't got the classes in front of me but I expect it will be new cars (since 2001) with emissions over 300gms/km....

Ive just heard the new tax rises on the radio and it says that heavy polluting cars will pay double tax!

What do they class as heavy polluting cars then? They must have a band of cars they intend to tax higher?

Anyone shed any light on this?

Cossies etc wont get touched as they are not in the new tax bracket range.

It goes of emissions, so have a look how much your cars CO2 on sits like parkers. Money up on Fags good

Fuel doh

Though income tax decrease is good!

I agree with the fags going up as they know most of the dirty buggers will pay it anyway, so good call in my opinion.

No ones mentioned the 2p cut in income tax though.

The budgets just swings and roundabouts, where you gain on one, you lose out on another.

Although the fact that their still hanging on to this global warming and co2 shite, and using it as an excuse to tax bigger engined cars more is just ridiculous now. especially when the true evidence says otherwise.

Point-by-point:

The key points from Chancellor Gordon Brown's eleventh Budget:

Basic rate of income tax to fall from 22p to 20p from April next year.

Beer will rise by 1p a pint from midnight Sunday, cider by 1p a litre, wine by 5p a bottle and sparkling wine by 7p. Duty on spirits will be frozen.

Cigarettes to rise by 11p a packet. VAT on nicotine patches to be cut from 17.5% to 5%.

Road tax on highest-polluting vehicles up to £400 from April next year.

Fuel duty up 2p per litre, in line with inflation.

Top-rate income tax threshold will rise to £43,000 from April 2009.

Education spending in England will rise from £60bn this year to £74bn in 2010. From now to 2010 spending per pupil rise by a further 20 per cent, 10 per cent in real terms, to £6,600

Corporation tax will be cut from 30p to 28p from April next year.

Tax exemption for capital gains will rise from £8,800 to £9,200, and will be £18,400 for married couples.

Inheritance tax will rise from £285,000 now to £350,000 in 2010.

Child benefit, for a first child, will rise from £17.45 a week to £20 a week by 2010.

• in 2007-08 only, freezing the rates for motorbikes in the lower band with
higher bands increasing by £1-£2; and freezing VED rates for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV), Special Types Vehicles, Combined Transport Vehicles and all vehicle categories that are linked to the basic goods rate;7 and
• aligning the VED rates for petrol and diesel cars as the differential in nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emissions for new cars is expected to fall to close to zero once Euro V and VI emission standards become mandatory.
• Changes to this year’s VED rates take effect from 22 March 2007. All changes in subsequent years take effect from licenses commencing 1 April in the respective year.

Do you guys not think that to those people who can afford cars who do naff all miles to the Gallon should have to pay more tax.
People who own 4X4's for the local school run.

Sorry but I feel they should it is their choice to own a "statement" car.
They probably have a big house and have to pay high band council tax, so why not higher car tax we need to start realising all fuels are not unlimited.

I dont really drink or smoke so I dont give a shit about fags and drink going up but I rely on my car to do my job. Without it i'd be on the bread line. If they tax me off the road in my eyes it will for millions of others too.

Why dont they whap the tax on fags up by over a quid, make their money from the cigs, then leave road tax alone?

Cigarettes do not serve any purpose at all, where as vehicles do? Might aswell tax the fuck outta them instead.

That would be great!!! I must admit i do like it when fags go up, as more often than not it means everyone will benefit somewhere else. So come on smokers, keep on smoking and handing over the cash!!!

Seriously though, the government would be buggered without smokers as its a major source of income for them. They know they can get away with banging the extra on fags and then making them look 'good' by knocking a few pence of other things.

can't see them doing that when the number of smokers is possibly going to decrease when the ban comes in, in a little while.

not to mention that stopping people smoking means they'll be able to give less money to the NHS!

quite a sensible option, but i also agree that 4x4s should be heavily taxed, they serve no purpose to anyone other than farmers and those who genuinely go offroad in them, annoys the hell out of me people using such ridiculous vehicles to drive 800mtrs up the road to take the kids to school

too many short sighted monkies that generally spout off without knowing the facts on this site...

the tax from cigarettes in the uk comes to just short of 9billion quid....per year

7.8 billion of which is designated to the nhs....

and in turn the nhs pays out 1.5 billion to treat smokers..

so thats 6.3 billion from us,....the,...how did one pf user put it,...the dirty buggers,...putting into the nhs...

won't work though - need to think that there will be a higher percentage of less well off people that smoke - if tax goes up massivly, they will have to either give up, or they will find ways arounf paying the tax.. - which would then put you back to square one. The government has to find the money from somewhere....

does anyone else notice the duty on spirits never goes up as thats the MP's drinks!
it will soon be cheaper to drink vodka in the park for the little youngsters rather than cider!

Well Mr Brown has certainly fucked me up big time!!!

I drive a 911 (996) turbo which is 339 g/km so that will be £400.
I also have a noble which I suppose doesnt need road tax as the fucking thing never works

I have my own LTD company of which I pay myself the majority of my money via dividend and that has increased to 22%!

Why do the goverment always seem to target the wrong people, they want to clamp down further on the fucking wankers in the world that dont work out of choice (please let me reiterate the out of choice part!!)

I would estimate without going into things properly that i'm £3k per annum out of pocket now well from when they implement everything, and thats just through income & road fund licence!!
