Personally I agree with the idea that big heavy fuel inefficient vehicles should pay more road tax, I dont see why people feel the need to drive a landcruiser or range rover just to drop the kids off at school, so something discouraging their use like this seems a good way to help the environment potentially, especially if the money raised was spent on improving public transport, although of course it wont be

In reality for day to day family transport there is no need for anyone to have anything heavier or bigger engined than a focus 1.6 realistically, anything more than that is a luxury in most cases.

but the point is that t's "ROAD" tax not "EMISSIONS RELATED" tax

road tax is supposed to pay for the upkeep of the roads and thats it

an emissions tax should be paid for by the original owner of the vehicle or at mot time

if your car wieghs more than another you should pay more road tax
if it weighs less you should pay less, the thinking behind this is that you wear away less of the road on a smaller lighter vehicles tyer than you would o a big lumbering juggernauts fat tyres

most of the policies made up are by people who don't actually inhabit this world of ours, they are up there with the super mario brothers or sonic in dipsy laa laa land dreaming up this cofusing new taxes while in some sort of power de ranged stupor

Doesnt matter what the tax is called IMHO as almost fuck all of it goes on the road.

Heavy and/or fuel inefficient vehicles should be made more expensive to run, petrol prices is one way to do that, this is another, im not against it in principle, its just the fact they WILL theive the money to spend on blowing up iraqis or something that I have an issue with.

so the most diplomatic and effective way of stopping global warming problems is by taking pieces of paper of people while they carry on destroying the planet

This countries answer to any problem even a environment problem is "just put a tax on the fuckers"

This countries going backwards

i cant really disagree with that but why cant people be free to chose any car they like?
they do everywhere else in the world a friend of mine has just moved to america and went straight out and bought a 4.0ltr.
what ever happened to freedom of choice? must i have some corrupt jumped up politicians telling me i must drive a small car?
maybe when they sort the fucking shambles of the rest of the country out first then they can talk about cars!
public transport is shit out of major cities
the forces are overstretched from cuts and out of area commitments
the nhs is struggling
tax is hitting people hard
house prices are through the roof
the police wont catch anyone unless it involves getting some extra money for the xmas piss up fund.
including not going to my wifes work when she was getting threatened by bottle wealding drunks and junkies. (thats swindon for ya fudgeass)
oh well get someone there later when theres not someone going 74 on the m4
fucking fire service have had their fair share of strikes moaning at 30k when servicemen and women have to cover their strikes with no complaint and some are on 12k
i could rant all day!!

I dont see why people who have done well for themselves and can afford a £50k Range Rover should be penalised really. they choose to have a gas guzzler, they pay for it everytime they put their foot down and at the forecourt, just like I do with a 400 bhp cossie.

What I have an issue with is the stupid fucking women drivers ( and it nearly always is on the school run) who cant see over the steering wheel and dont know the width of their husbands range rover and cause all sorts of drama's when they try and park and go through gaps. Unfortunately there is no idiot women tax in this country

I read somewhere once that one way you could stand up to govt and cause mayhem would be, and its probably never gonna happen, but for a whole load of ppl to cash in road tax. Would need to be most of the country but DVLA and hence govt would lose shit load of cash, eventually the court system and police would not be able to keep up with the workload caused by such action. Never gonna happen tho,

Of course there will never be a tax like that in this country, that part of what i was saying was light hearted and was to be treated that way.

I dont think bringing illegal immigrants into this convo will help tbh mate.

why do you think that then

Why do I think which part of it?

If you mean why do I think heavy or fuel inefficent vehicles should be taxed more, then its to discourage their ownership so that as they get older they find their way off the road sooner (if you spend 50K on a range rover new a 400 quid tax increase wont put you off, but if you buy an old snotter v8 for 50 quid it will)

If you mean why do I think they will waste the money on something other than transport, its cause they ALWAYS do.

If you think higher taxes wont discourage the use of these vehicles, particularly when they are in the "bargain basement 500 quid or less" section of the paper you are naive.
Tax DOES work as a means of persuading people, if it didnt, I would be driving an old 60s yank V8 right now in fact, I love them but cant afford the fuel on one as a daily driver while I do 1K miles a week frequently.

What a stupid suggestion given that to use your vehicle you then need to tax it again and there is an admin charge involved, they would make a fucking fortune

Oh dear.. I can see my 4.2 Audi costing me a bit more next year

I will get my own little bit of self comfort somehow... Probably just not bother taxing my track car then giggle to myself fiendishly every time I take it for a blast down the lanes whilst feeling like a proper badass criminal

Do you have any figures to support your wild claims, and do you think that the government CHOOSES to spend money on immigrants or is legally bound to do so?

"Some reports suggest that road tax on the least fuel-efficient cars will double to about £400 a year."

To$$ers.

Does he think that this will help me to reduce my CO2 ouput, err no.

I either have to scrap car and buy a smaller less CO2 producing car - which in turn will create more CO2 during its prodcution.

Or simply dig deeper into my pocket to continue using my existing motor.

I refer you to my first point "To$$ers"

How about this for a curve ball. Start taxing the forign lorries that can cross from their own country, deliver there cheap sh1te here, and then travel back without spending a bean on our road system, or paying any duty via our fuel.

Hang on, that will mean road pricing then, or special permits. Best not then...

I think they can?

I know that the american diplomats are stating that it is a tax, and as such that they are exempt.

That said, if they dont pay is Ken going to send an invoice to
Mr Lorry driver
in AN Other country
Euro land

Answers on a postcard please.

Ken Livingston was on lbc a couple of weeks ago saying they should be paying it but it cannot be chased through the courts in any way so they can drive in and out of London and have no issues,

He also said the American embassy owes over £1,000,000 in congestion fees and he is powerless to get the money back.

I think they (the US diplomats) believe they are being "taxed" by having to pay.

Most of the US forces bases over here, have their own fuel stations. They fill up there big motors and pay the same tax as they would back home.
