Default 2wd saff running problem

my mates just bought a 2wd saff and hes having a few running problems which he cant seem to resolve, running lumpy and misses slightly, coughing and spluttering, BUT when you unplug the brown plug on the inlet manifold, it runs fine, so he bought a new one and changed it, and a new blue temperature switch, but still the same when plugged in, any ideas
