Working out 4, 5 or 6 axis worth of movement is just way too complicated for anything other than a computer.
Its not often I'm really impressed with CNC stuff as I seem to spend most of the day watching them so they get boring after a while but the V8 cylinder block machining was very impressive as are a few other videos on You Tube:
Theres also one of a W16 engine:

The co-ordination of this machines is incredible, amazing to watch work:

The speed this horizontal can remove metal at is also amazing:

There is also a hybrid turning / milling centre which on there some where which is an interesting looking machine.

But it was one of these
and it had 2 tables as opposed to the one in the picture
the company I worked for had 2 of the bugger a and also a 5 avis Anayak. The bed on that was about 30ft !
My little brother used to run a CNC milling machine which had a specially lengthened bed so they could make the spars for A3** airbus wings and that bed was just short of 100metres. Was fucking massive.

Coated tungsten carbide tooling will last for ages on Aluminium and you can use crazy machining speeds.
It would be a LOT slower if it was tool steel instead of ali.

try doing that in some of the steels we use
were the only company that do the propeller hubs for dowty, like the dash 8 and we do the rotors for westlands
people outside of engineering think its cool but i guess we are too used to it
couple of pics of the stuff we do
