Default Fooked alternator ?

The alternator on the old girl started being a bit noisy last week and went quiet when i put it under load i.e. put the lights on, and went noisy again when i switched them off. Checked the battery and was 12.26v so i thought it must still working. She did a couple of short trips since and was ok. Got in her this morning and battery almost dead and would'nt start. Hooked her up to the works van and she started ok but stalled when i took the leads off. I presume this is because the battery was flat and the alternator was not working and was no power to keep the fuel pump working. Hooked her back up to the van for about 20 mins to get her up to temperature and she was fine after that. Can't find my multimeter so i can't check the battery voltage but it seems to point to the alternator to me. What do you guys think ? The battery light did not come on though as i thought they did when an alternator was'nt charging the battery. Your thoughts please peeps

Dry, what sort of noises was it making?

Does it look like an original alternator?

Was a rattle sort of a noise if you get me. It sounded like i'd left something in the engine bay lol. It went when i put the lights on etc (i.e. when it was under load).

I expect the brushes have worn, ive had this before. The alternator still charges enough to distinguish the light but is no where near enough to replenish the battery etc.

If your lucky you will be able to get the brush/diode pack assembly out with it in situ, only 2 screws

And then try jump starting it again (obviously the alternator won't charge) but see if the rattling goes away.

if it does, jobs a good un fit a new brush pack and it will be like brand new, if not, alternator bearings are probably knackered.

On the back side mate, sometimes they are philips sometimes they are flat head.

Its about the only removable thing on the alternator

Personally i'd say its probably going to be jsut that.

Should cost you £25 MAX for a new un

yes for a new brush/diode pack assembly.

me being a cheap skate i get them from the scrappy lol , but any lucas/bosch dealer should be able to supply you a new one.

maybe even the motor factors!

As i say though i'd remove the old one and checkl for noises, as theres a slim chance the bearings may be gone.
