Default Mk4 Golf 1.8T GTi's.... any good??

As above getting really fooked off with my 200sx using it as a daily runner due to putting miles on it, it loving the petrol and general noise/impracticalness of the exhaust (my own fault I know!! ).

Was toying with outing it and getting a practical boring car for the mo until ive sorted a house etc out..... Looked in the trader and on edition38.com at a couple of Golf's and they seem quite good value for money..... Lookin around the 5k mark...

So has anyone driven one?? Not expecting them to be a rocket ship/rally car etc but they actually anygood to get in and use everyday?? I presume mileage wise isnt really an issue??

Cheers
Chris

Not too keen on the Seats to be honest. Golfs are small enough as they are. Ideally was after something bigger but not barge ish, not smaller!

Theres loads of threads on here about these Chris, try a search.

On the whole they're blindingly good cars, the only things that let them down in my opinion are the handling and the electrics, wiper motors, window regulators, door solnoids are all popular and none are cheap.

Handling can be vastly improved with bigger wheels/good tyres though and the other stuff your just gonna have to bite the bullet if/when they break.

Can be tuned quite well aswell.

I love mine to bits. I bought mine after owning a S2 as I wanted something more reliable, smooth and comfortable. I have the AUM with the KO3 Sport turbo on it that can easily get to 230 with basic mods and a chip.

I'm getting my 19" for it tomorrow, then the front ARB then coilovers to improve the handling.

Drive one first, you maybe surprised. I bought my with 43k on the clock. Had a few niggles with it (NSF window reg, exhaust bracket coming away from the body and a knocking noise which turned out to be bushes) but other than that I love it and its a joy to drive. I even think the handling is ok.

Not as much fun as my old S2 but I knew it wouldnt be when I bought it.

This is just my opinion

My brother has one. I drove it a little while back. They have hardly any lag at all, but i found it quite boring TBH.

I do indeed matey

Like Andy said they're a totally different breed of car to the Escort RS or Cossie

I love mine to bits though, yes they can be a bit boring but thats why I'm gonna get mine remapped and get the sport turbo at some point, but they are so comfortable and easy to drive

I picked mine up for Ł4750 on a T plate with 49k on it

Ok cool cheers for the replies. As per first thread Im not expecting it to be a rocket ship etc and am sure ill be bored with it after no time at all but its only going to be used as a runabout! I wouldnt really compare it to an RS or Cossie as to be honest all of them ive had (various s2's, saff cos and esc cos) I got bored with all them!!

Andyno1 - ill check that website cheers . Ive been looking on edition38.com and there are some lovely ones on there!

To give you an idea of what you can get for the money, I just sold this one below with 66k miles and full VW history [just had cambelt service], aircon, multi cd, bbs alloys, coloured recaros etc. for Ł4995.

I used it for a couple of weeks and had forgotten how nice they were to drive [compared to the 1.6's that we sell by the shed load]. Of course they're not as quick as a cossie but things don't seem to fall off as often and they start every time you turn the key

As said above though, they're boring after 5 minutes but that might just be me and my lack of patience

Make sure it's had a new timing belt at around 65k/70k too if you are getting one. My mrs's went on us and cost a fortune to sort out, and wasnt the same after
