Default Why do exhaust pipes have so many bends in them???

every time the cars up on a ramp i cant stop thinking that if the pipe was stright or nearly straight all the way to the back box surely it would have better breathing

am i just thinking rubbish or is there a reason for the pipe being all bendy with neary 90 degres bends. looks to me that thery're just bendy so they can fit around other parts

anyone?

the underside of a car is not straight,so the exhaust needs to follow the curves,or else it hangs low and scrapes

its not just bending round things, they make certain bends to lower the noise and change the pitch....

if you have a kink in a pipe here and there it can also change back pressure to the engine.

And it might increase breathing if it were staight, but there is a certain something called "back pressure" that the exhsut provides. Too much and the engine is choked to an extent, but too little is just as bad aswell

I mate of mine had a mk 1 escort mexico back in the day, it was equipped with straight through cherry bombs, suffice to say the neighbours loved him especially when he used to come home from his girls house in the early hours

I swear if you were at lands end you could hear the fucking thing and we lived in sw london

so if I have a side exit 3" system on an Escort Cosworth, with no boxes and a cat near the end, would this be

a benefit or

a mistake?

so will a stright exhaust pipe cause more or less back pressure?
