Having problems with understanding the new ford engines.

duratec has superseeded the zetec but can anyone confirm if the duratec inlet manifolds would fit on a zetec head or are they different bolt pattern

they won't fit by any means mate.. there are loads of differrences, made all the more confusing by Ford badging some zetecs as duratec.

easy way to tell... duratecs are chain driven cams and the exaust exits on the same side as a cossie/pinto

zetecs are belt driven cams and the exhaust exits on the same side as a x-flow/bda

 

forgot to mention.... there are also 2 different types of zetec.. one ford and i believe the other was made by yamaha(?)

 

which is called a zetec -se and found in 1400, 1600 in loads of cars and i think 1700 in the puma.

The st170 lump is badged as a duratec i think, but its more a zetec. i think

 

so what is best to go for when turboing

do i go for a zetec or go for it and do a duratec

but the focus rs is a zetec badged up as a duratec

ST170 and FRS are both Zetecs badged as Duratecs.

REAL Duratecs are fantastic engines, and are already turbo'd in the MPS Mazdas as standard.

 

Stavros is 100% correct. They're both Zetecs rebadged as Duratecs. The ST170 has a zetec with a variable timing head, and the RS has a turbo'ed Zetec rebadged as a 'Duratec RS'

Proper Duratecs are great engines, some nicely tuned examples are found in the kitcar world, and yeah the Mazda MPS cars have the 2.3 Duratec with Turbos strapped on. My ST has a proper Duratec engine as well. (please no one try to contest that)

Duratecs have chain driven cams and compared to the Zetec, the exahaust and inlet manifolds have swapped sides (i.e the exhaust is round the back of my engine, compared to a zetec where it would be round the front)

 

depends on what you're after imo.. there are plenty of bits easily available in this country for building a zetec turbo and one could probably be done relatively cheaply.

I think turbocharging the duratec would probably cost a fair bit more due to one off bits and development, but I seem to remember people in the U.S. were already turboing these some time ago with very good results. speak to some engine builders you trust re this option imo.

as far as turbocharging a zetec goes, I'd say start with the ST170 engine and go from there. it has a much better head than the other zetecs

 

so does my mk3 mondeo, its the same engine as the fiesta ST

 

My Focus ST has a "Duratec" badged engine but its made by Volvo

Sadly, it has a Bosch ECU
