Could be the springs on the pressure plate snapping. Does it creep when you have it in gear with the clutch pedal pushed down?

i had this afew years back gears were fine when cold then would go real tight got that pissed off in the end had the gearbox stripped. Box was found to be in good nick but the oil was like treacle really thick as probably had never been drained due to no drain plug.Replaced the bearings as a precaution and has never given grief since.Maybe this is your problem mate hope this helps.

Whilst were on the subject of gearbox and oil, How do you change it?

If you do it off the car wont it pour out of the drive shaft holes?

Also how is the level checked?

Cheers.

You are correct, remove a driveshaft and let it drain out.

Good old Ford, thinking of all the little things

Pop out a driveshaft to drain, refit shaft, then refill by undoing the plug at the front. Just refill on level ground until the oil starts weeping out (about 4.2l )
