Default Anyone on here use Skype?

Just wondering what the quality is.

My dad has got a Skype phone in his house in Thailand and I was gonna buy one too, so that we can chat for free. However if heard that the quality can be p!sh too, with intermitted muting.
That could be down to the fact that his internet is connect by satallite.

Comments anyone?

Skype call quality has always been superb for me, but as it goes across the internet, it's only as good as the servers/networks the call is traversing.

You don't need a Skype phone either, you can install software on your PC and use a decent headset (or even just speakers and a mic'). Got to be worth a try for free......

Cheers guys.

I never knew that we could use a mic and speakers. That will save me purchasing a phone over here and taking it home.

The phones that I was looking at was ranging from $23 to 430 (Walmart) and they were just like a normal house phone.

I'll get my missus to get it downloaded and set up to give it a try before I come home.

Even a cheap-ish headset will be better than speaker and mic' due to potential feedback issues. Headset's easier on the arm if on a long conversation too, lol.

You can also have a text chat (like MSN Messenger) and share files etc..

www.skype.com

I've also tested PC to normal phone line, and again the call quality was superb.

We use it across our branches etc & we've started to get all our destination agents using it.

Spot on IMO, but as Bills said............... its the servers / networks that are the problem!

So I take it if you want to call someone, then you have to text them / land call them, then hangup and jump on the computer?

I prosume it's just like MSN (you have to be logged on before someone can call/talk to you)

Tho depending on what network your UK mobile is, if you have x network mins, you can call his landline or mobile for free!

Skype for me has always been fantastic. Never failed to let me down once, unlike MSN which frequently has problems. Calls are clear and you can literally talk for hours without any problems. I find MSN is more for kids and with Ebay buying it out and slaping it all over its site, traffic is growing. Bottom line is that if everyone in the future has a pc or plasma/pc media home setup then BT and Ntl will be a waste of time. Plus you can use the camera to see them on screen. A bit like when the Naked girl randomly rings up Stallone in Demolition man, but not as advanced/ full screen (yet).

Obviously if you get Skype credit so you can call landlines and mobiles it will be fine as well as cheaper but if that person uses the Mic/Speaker combo you might find it slightly annoying if they do not have the volume levels for the room adjusted correctly. A proper dedicated headset is far better so that it seperates the ear section so you can not get that down the line too.

You can get various types of skype phones now and not just those from Skype.com shop, which allow you to view contact lists on phone from the sofa or whatever and call but units like the one below which permit you to use your standard home phone or mobile.

yes it is a bit like msn, there is a chat thing like msn aswell

you can call through msn your contacts etc but only 1 person

with skype you can have up to 10 people all on the same line chatting to each other

Use it all the time between family and friends

No extra phone bills to pay, and part of my family is in Canada and Norway so it saves me big amounts of cash.

Isnt there a skype for mobile phones that runs through the GPRS signal ? That will save me dialing numbers on the mobile next - so free calls off the mobile too Just log on to them through mobile skype and chat away

I also have Skype on my mobile phone, but mainly use wireless connections over GPRS (data is still a rip off in UK compared to forward thinking countries).

You can also have answerphone functionality and call forwarding. Just topped up my Skype credit and have got 6 months free UK calls to landlines

I've just got a Pay as you talk mobile (SE K700i - not into mobiles!) so I guess talking through my mobile is out..........or is it? It does has Bluetooth, but would think my new Dell PC won't.

Now another thing (to confuse me!) is that my internet in the hoose will be wireless. Could this be used to connect a Skype type phone to and be able to walk around the garden (for example) so I'm not tied to any wires?

Many thanks for all the replies!

If you have wireless, buy a CE device with wireless capability and install skype on it

http://accessories.skype.com/item?SI...u=WSKP100PROMO

but that's a full package that doesn't require a PC, Skype don't list just the phone on their site.

And apparently, Skype won't do voice over GPRS (I must've just used the messaging ) on a mobile phone - I use W-Fi anyway, but wanted to correct my previous post.

One of our Brokers based in Hungary uses it to call the UK & us here in Spain. He´s always crystal clear when we speak to him.

We plan to move across to Skype shortly, currently we use CIF boxes for our phones and the quality is very poor due to our main PC being over worked and Telefonica being shite. Changing service providers shortly.

Cheers Billabong!

My dad called me yesterday to a landline using the Sype phone and was just like he was on a normal phone line. the only issue was that he was talking through a sattillete so made the conversations longer, but hae it was (nearly) free!

What about this phone........could you get one of these that connect to Skype?
