The ECU (silver box) should have a sticker with identifying features:

blue red blue is S1
the hearts etc is 90 spec S2
blue red black is 88 spec S2
blue red white is 86 spec S2

yes it they will physically fit.

No not all will work.

ones with knock sensor function will only work on cars with a knock sensor, ones without knock sensor function will work on any engine afaik!

Easiest option is to go for:

Blue-Red-Blue = Series one cars (B, C, D)
Blue-Red-White = Early series two cars, with no knock sensor, mainly the first D plates

or if you have a knock sensor on your car and want to keep its function or can get these ECU's easier (remember they only work with knock senor equipped cars)

Blue-Red-Black = Series 2 cars with a knock sensor (E, F, G)
Hearts & Diamonds = 90 spec cars, with a knock sensor (G, H)

Hi,

The knock sensor is on the right top side END of the inlet plenum(manifold)
as you look into the engine bay from memory it is a green sensor.
if you need any std ecu's i have some.
