Boot mounted radiators?? How can they work?
I just cant get my head round boot rads/interoolers/whatever.
How can they possibly work properly without the constant assistance of fans?
Intercoolers would make the car laggy with all that exta pipeing.
Rads & interoolers would never get the same cooling effect as ones mounted up front.
Mid engined cars have the same thing, but scoops are added to the body work so negates the problem.
So why is it done to non mid engine cars & how can they maintain efficiency?

i was thinking of rear mounting my rad on the rs200,free`s up more room for me for a larger frount intercooler.
i have 2 air (ears) scoops on the roof that i can run to the rad so no worries there for me

There are NEVER rear mounted intercoolers on front engine cars, thats just bloody stupid. Tho have seen a couple of mid-engine cars with front mounted coolers.
But you will be suprised how little effect long pipe runs have on lag, dont believe the internet myth.
Rear mounted rads and oil coolers could work as well if not better than front ones if designed right.
Its not hard to get the ducting right so air gets to it and away from it easy, and the key to efficiency is having a TOTAL seal in and out the rad, something you almost never get on front mounted setups, so in effect you could get it a lot better than on the front.

Ive never seen a rear mounted intercooler on a front engine car, you got a pic of the cars you mention then?
Seen plenty of Rallycross cars, but all had cooler where it normally is.

Pat Dorans mk6 rallycross fezzer has a rear mount, if had bought the last few issues of fast ford you would have read all about it
theirs actually runs COOLER than the front mounted rad!
it needs to be a total sealed unit, Pats had 4 naca ducts feeding it (2 from roof, 1 from each rear quarter) and the boot lid chopped out (it was mounted verticle, not horizontal
)
get onto the back issues

the Gatebil Escort has it.
the Gatebil Escort has it.

It has a rear mounted rad, same as lots of rallycross etc etc cars do, and done in the exact way i mentioned in my first post and fudgey just elaberated on above.
Show me some pics of these rear mounted intercoolers on front engine cars please mate...

I've not seen rear mounted intercoolers before (on rallycross either) but helped with the build of Tom Scarletts series one which had the rad mounted in the boot & this was in a fully sealed section with ducts coming in from the rear quarters, an air vent cut into the boot floor & the escape for the air out of the rear panel. it also had kenlow fans mounted onto the rad but was in need of more powerful fans to be honest but still ran no hotter than most modern cars, & also had a high pressure water pump circulating the water. the main reason for locating this in the boot was to make more room for the turbo but was still just as effective

he is saying the same as you

Don't forget as well, that for rallying and rallycross cars, it's very important to lift the intercooler or radiator out of the way......
Where you have a long pipe run for water, sometimes they can be a bastard to bleed. MR2, since I have a little experience of them, runs a front mounted rad, and the pipe runs are hideous......

I've been to a few of the rally cross events mainly at Lydden Hill & I think most of the super cars ie Pat Doran, Dermot Carnegie, John McClusky etc are either running rear mounted rads or they are as normal saff's escos's etc with the intercooler at the front & rad behind. There is a mark 4 (i think) escort running cossie engine / running gear with rear mounted rad being tuned by Field Motorsport which runs escort diesel rads as they are much more powerful than normal rads.
what would be the point of a rear mounted intercooler, surely the front of the car is the coldest place on it as that gets the new cold air first,,the only reason for rear mounted rads is the lack of new cold air due to it passing through the larger front mount intercooler. move it to the back in a sealed unit and have the air drawn up from under the car(or rear windows, roof) and out the boot or tailgate.
thats what i think anyway.
