The group B crash that ended it all is said to be the crash that Joaquim Santos had in a group B RS200 where he left the road and killed some spectators It was in the rally of Portugal in 86.

 

Sadly there were several deaths in those years. Tovinen springs to mind in his S4.

However, it wasnt really the cars that were at fault. so much as spectator control. You've all seen the footage of Rohl in the Quattro caining through the spectators. And to be honest. Car design and occupant safety has improved dramatically in the last 20 years. So if thos accidents had happened today. 99% chance the crews would of walked away.
