well worth keeping once you get through the problems you inherited when you bought it
the only work i've done to mine in the past 2 years are things that i wanted to do,not had to do cos of something breaking
at the moment i wouldnt part with mine unless someone made me a ridiculous offer

I know what you mean (see my thread I've posted on here today). I've hankered after a S1 for years and now my experiences so far of owning one have soured the dream I had for so long. Why does it do this? Why has that gone wrong? Why has that fallen off...again? Why does that not work when it did yesterday? Whats that burning smell? And why doesn't my wallet have any money in it?

A love - hate relationship...... I hate it and it loves having money thrown at it.

If you bought them in bad shape then you must have expected to pay out some money? if looked after properly these motors dont go wrong that often, i've had 2 and neither have suffered major mechanical failings or really wanted for much other than a good service schedule.

they are what you make them into lads

Still love both of mine and neither have cost me a penny for a while (touches a big bit of wood).

Just been filling them up and hammering them.

I did have to spend £3 on a new oil filler cap if that counts

I have no idea..... I paid over £5k for my S1 and yes, it's absolutley mint inside and out, but it's just one thing after another trying to get it to run properly. When it works it's like nothing else, but it spends more time being locked up with me wondering if I'd been better off setting fire to my money than pursueing what at the moment seems a lost cause.

Nope!

Do it proper, and it wont cause a prob. It's a very hot hatch - they are not meant to be cheap.

Renew all the hoses with sicone items - every one - get them from roose.

Change all the Gaitors for new items. Re bush all the suspension. Re bush the steering column and fit a new rack. Fit new tca's and track rod ends (Partco about 30 quid for everything - same as ford stuff).

Renew all the brake lines with copper items. Fit new rear wheel cylinders. Buy new leads, plugs, dizzy cap from ford. Buy new header tank cap, and new oil cap. Check condtion of major wiring and replace as needed. Inject wax into sills, chassis legs, front box sections etc. Take kit off and wax arches to prevent from rotting. Fit a new fuel pump and filter.

Less than 500 quids worth there, and could be done in 3 or 4 weekends. Then you shouldnt havea problem

Had mine basically since 1994.Still love it as much as I ever did as its been very very reliable.Bear in mind that mine is only used for trackdays, about 1,000 miles a year, but I was told that equals about 10,000 road miles. But I'm getting a little fed up with its power output, its very annoying having pri*ks in Cossie's holding you up on the bends only to piss off into the sunset on the straights, then hold you up again at the next bend!! But as much as I'd love a trackday Cossie,if it ever blew up I wouldnt have the money to fix it,so the RST is staying put for a while longer.Regards,Micky

You have to expect alot of problems with these cars nowadays as alot of them now are around 20 years old!! You are gonna have problems wiv them. Cars in todays world aint built to last that long

i wouldnt say that about the majority of modern cars these days!! they are all built better with higher service intervals and modern engines are much better than they were!! for example, the cvh needs a cambelt change every 30,000 miles and the latest zetec is 100,000 miles!
years ago you wouldnt entertain looking at a car with 100,000 miles on the clock and nowadays thats nothing!!

i agree with that and to be honest having driven alot of other high powered cars for some reason nothing matches the feel of my rs turbo. Its a drivers car...... well a driver who is a mechanic or has a big wallet.

No offence but after 10k, it should be reliable or it's not been repaired/done properly..

You'll love it again when it's right

Wheel bearings are £8 - replaced a couple on mine lately
Your local group are pretty handy with the spanners if you need any help or advice
I have 4 good condition road tyres for cheap if you need some 195/50R15 that i took off my track wheels if you are desperate
