I just finished doing a 4x4 to 3dr cossie engine swap.
Never again.
I found that for both dropping the cross members made an enormous difference to difficulty level.
It only needs to be 10-20mm which makes a world of difference when you're trying to get the sump over the power steering rack.
The only other bit that's a dog is getting the splines lined up on the gearbox when you refit it. 2wd much much much easier than doing the 4x4.
My engines were complete both ways, which I think helped cos I was using an engine crane to lift them out.
