Default fuel problem (i think)

Hi guys, had a terrible time with my car today

I was cruising down the motorway, when my car started to cut out, the revs would drop and bounce back, until it all just stopped. I went on the hardshoulder and coudnt start the car. My fuel gauge was showing half a tank, when i really had quarter tank. So I thought it might be a fuel problem at this point. I put £5 worth of fuel and started it. It ran for about a mile and then cut out again. I got towed to a BP. I left the car for an hour and put a full tank of petrol and the car started normally and i drove it home fine.

Any reasons to why this happened? I was thinking of fuel filter or fuel pump problem

Cheers.

Mine started playing up like this and it turned out to be the distributor. Could be the fuel pump relay or the pump. Is it priming ok ? Do you have spark ? Is fuel getting through ?
