Default MSN help

I NEED HELP!

I have a problem with MSN Messenger and it's driving me nuts.

Every time I try and log in it won't let me, and running the trouble shooter, it comes up with this:

Your hosts file contains MSN Messenger related entries which may interfere with name resolution.

Anyone got a clue what this means as I'm pretty clueless with computers.

Also, I tried to download a new copy and upgrade to the newer version and I basically can't access any MSN related web pages, I can't even get into my Hotmail account.

Anyone got any ideas on what's up? Or how to fix it?

I've run AdAware and SpyBot and it hasn't helped.

Thanks in advance

Download the patch from here.

Right click and close MSN then run the patch.

Fingers crossed it will work. worked for others on that forum.

Are you sitting behind any kind of work-server firewall to access the internet?

It does have a Firewall, but I'm assured that this has nothing to do with it, and another computer on the same network is working fine with the same settings.

The service provider has changed a few days ago, and this was when the problem started, but, again another computer is running on the same wireless network with the same settings and it's fine, so I assumed it was merely a coincidence.

Adrian - Will try that, thanks

Thanks everyone, all help is much appreciated

Okay, things aren't going well.

I've tried downloading the patch and it doesn't start to download

I've also searched on the Mess with Messenger site for other ideas but so far I've found nothing.

The thing I don't understand is that it's everything MSN related that doesn't work. I can't even go on the website to download another copy as it says it cant find the server

Does it sound like a virus? or some other form of spyware?

If you can, go to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Sites and check that MSN hasn't somehow got itself as a blocked site.

You could always type in the MSN url address and click on Allow and
see if that has any affect.

Sometimes when getting a new ISP, it can take up to a week for it to
establish the DNS for some sites.

If you're absolutely desperate to use MSN, you could try and log on
via http://webmessenger.msn.com/default.aspx?R=1 until you get your proper one sorted.
