My old XR3i (1983) with an 1988 XR3i engine needs a new gearbox.

Now, how much different are the normal 1.6 and XR3i gearbox, if any?
And would the normal 1.6 gearbox fit to my XR3i?
The gearbox is an 1990-1991. I was told...

And a 'stupid' question... My father says that the XR3i engine is only an 1.6 with injection. But I ofcourse disagree, because then it would only be 1.6i, right?
What's the difference in the XR3i and 1.6i fx?

as you are saying your xr3i is from 83? am i right? then a never gearbok from 86- won't fit right in as i am told, but it will fit with some modifications of mounting brackets i think. the easiest is to find a xr3i or 1.6i from 80-85 as they will fit right on.

your other question about the different in the engines. hmmm what can i say? the 1.6i from 86- has ke jetronic but the xr3i from 86- has k jetronic. thats the main different. some modifications are maybe bigger nosles or so im not sure realy

 

Oh yes... But the engine was from '88... So a mk4 gearbox should fit in then? even a 1.6i instead of xr3i gearbox

And yes... There must be some other mods, or else it wouldnt be 1.6i and xr3i

 

i think you misunderstood me a little. the gearbox mounting in the chassi is different from mk3 and 4 i have bean told so you see since you have a mk3 you will need to find a mk3 gearbox for your mk4 engine.

an xr3i is basically yes a 1.6 injection, and the gearbox casings are different as you say above but all are ib5 so will fit ur engine with no probs, ur chassis requires a box with a front mount of four holes found on mk3 and 5 escorts, a mk4 escort uses a 'cradle' to support the box and is mounted where the bell housing meets the meat of the box so to say

 

So even a mk5 gearbox would fit?
And no mk4 box, unless some modding?
