Found this on another site I use, it's a 106. Does really stiff suspension cause the floor to go like that?

focusv8 Yes but did the overly stiff suspension over-stress these joins and accelerate the rusting?

Soon after I fitted my coilovers, I was warned mk6 escorts suffer from this kind of structural failure at the rear from overly stiff suspension...... not sure where this person got their info from.

Same could be true for mk5 fiestas...

What year is this 106? If it's c.2000 or newer, I'm scared, if it's more like 1995, then I'd expect the arches to be corroded in the first place, but it's definitly been quickened by the high spring rates

looks like rust to me water gets into the cracks which rusts, weakens the metal which cracks where water gets in and rusts the fresh metal... etc etc those pics look like a rotten french car, water got into join from the wheel arch.
My missus has an 02 106 and the underside is rusty French muck

Its a bit of both...

shopping cars are designed to run rock hard suspension...

if you open the seams and let the wet in they will rot like buggery.

Could have had a bad whack on that side which has stressed the welds too... but mostly looks like corrosion..

106s use torsion bar rear suspension,, so the mounts bolt thru the boot floor, closer to the middle of the car.... not in the areas that has rotted/torn

in this picture the Rear mounts for the beam are under the little black plastic bung in the floor. IIRC.




so that would appear to be just normal rot? If it was mega stiff suspension causing it. then surely the main points of Tearing would be around the mounting points to the beam... from them plastic covers and the one in front of it (almost under where the rear seats should sit)

EDIT: having said that, i can see how Maybe it could try and bring the whole boot floor upwards like that

How much weight is over the rear suspension in a 106? there cant be enough weight over the rear wheels for the suspension to be that harsh that it sends a shock up the chassis. I would have thought if the suspension was too hard the car would bounce the wheels over bumps rather than cracks and rots.

hard suspension will cause premature failure as it sppeds up wear and tear. read somewhere aswell that after a certain amount of years a shockingly high percentage of spot welds on the car will fail

NUTS RuS blimey well spotted, didnt even notice a cage!

to me it just looks like rot, yes the stiff suspension may have increased the seperating of the joins, but rust caused it in the first place

Its mainly the fact its a badly made piece of french crap that doesnt have adequete rust prevention.

Once the shell was weakened by rot though, the hard suspension would have exagerated how quickly fractures then occured.

Mainly its the rust that has caused that though

Lowering the torsion bars on 106s does not make them stiffer, and I doubt very much this kid has purchased uprated torsion bars and anti-roll bars for his rear beam.

Well much firmer shocks would add to the stress through the top mounts to a certain extent.

I always though Pugs had very good rust prevention [aren't the shells galvanised?]

My 1998 106 is rust free and all the old 205's I look at always seem to be pretty good Much better than an old Ford anyway

It may be worth discussing on the 106 rallye club site:

Peugeots are galvanised so rust isn't a major problem although they do start to rust around joints as has been stated above. The rallye and GTi's had stiffend shells as well.

I'm interested in whats caused that to happen, but I think we need more info about the car etc.

i had a friend that in 2001 had a 1.1 fiesta he cut the springs so there was one coil left and that one coil did fuck all so no point it being there, was dropped like 200mm or something

handled like shit took off when hit a bump, perfect for handbrakes i must add!! good at burnouts to cuz no body roll and all from a 50bhp lump


started rotting like fuck on the aches like after a month an before it was hardly noticalble

I found my very first saff shell cracked across the rear "parcel shelf" from running slicks on track.

This is weird.

I best get checking my boot floor. I can hear a lot of creaking noises recently from the rear. Rose jointed beam, Strutbrace, and coilovers. I hope the floor isn't fucked.
