Default Well I'm not going for that car now. I'm fuming!

Basically some of you know I was going to go for a car in Scotland. Exactly what I was after, great price too. Seemed a bargain. I was going to pick it up this Saturday gone but the lad said he was working so no can do.

I said OK, I didn't really want to wait but if he had to work then he had to work, not his fault. So I message him yesterday to check that next Sat is ok still. No reply. Message again today, finally get one back telling me "oh sorry some's offered me X amount for it so I've sold it."

Now, I wouldn't mind as I had no deposit in place with him, just a verbal agreement so I guess he was free to do as he wanted, but the fact he specifically said to me "don't worry mate, it's not going anywhere" has left me pretty annoyed and gutted

Oh well, back to the search I guess.

I'm not sure I want to say what I'm after until I get it, as every time I do that I get a load of people jumping on my back and hassling me about it

Rab, very tempted mate. Time may force my hand and make me buy a car that's had nothing done to it. But I'm unsure about tackling a project as I neve rhave done and if I fooked it I'd be absolutely gutted.

Still being stuck with my wife's Escort, after half a dozen folk saying they will DEFINITELY be buying it, I'm afraid that he's done the right thing and taken the first cash offer that came along.

I wish I had done that now, instead of telling my guy with the bundle of notes that the car was provisionally sold.

I never class any car as really mine just off the word of a stranger, till you actually got and pick it up you have to just accept that sort of thing as par for the course, if you are desperate for a car, go fetch it straight away IMHO.

I don't know!

It was a mk5 Escort with an RST transplant. Still works out cheaper to insure than the beemer so I figured why not? Only problem is I don't want a gap of having no car when the beemer goes so time's not on my side.

I may well just say absolutely fookin balls to all this shit and build one myself, technical know how or not!

He agreed to sell me it for Ł1500, with hardly used buckets, RS2k bonnet with the bulges, Rondells, etc etc. Was a bargain. That's why I was prepared to go so far.

Chip you're right. But the insurance is cheaper and I reckon I could get better mpg out of the Escort. Mind's made up. Always, always wanted one so I figured might as well stop day dreaming and get one.

Spot on.

As a seller I've been fucked about by 'definate' buyers so I'll sell to the first person to put the cash in my hand.

For Ł1500?

As for the comment above about not being mine etc, yeah I get that, I'm just miffed really. Thing is I tried to collect it straight away but he said no he was working.

What a shit car - if you're going to have something with an RS Turbo engine it, why not just buy an RS Turbo, and then have everything else the RS scene has to offer.

Will you ever learn?

Fruit machines? Man, I haven't played on one of those or placed a bet of any kind since 2005 and I don't intend to go back! Fucking gambling, nearly ruined my life.

Yes, but Jay, you're missing the point.

You're ignoring advice from people who've been down this road and wished they hadn't.

It may be cheap now, but it'll be a shit car. Mk5 Escorts are generally pretty dogish cars, and just because it has a CVH turbo engine in, it's special?

I thought coming from a BMW might have actually kept you tempted to stay sensible, and not go buying some nail of a car.

Say you drive it back from Scotland and it goes bang - what next? Can you possibly afford to repair it if it needs an engine overhaul? In a situation where finances are stretched, the last thing you need is a knackered old modified car to steadily drain your bank balance.

...... and don't think anyone's having a pop at ya.

A lot of people dish out advice like this, and it's easy to when you have loads of cash, but I've been where you are, I don't have loads of money yet, and wanting a performance/modified car for cheap money when I had a little cost me big time.

My "cheap" 3k saff I bought in 1998 ended up costing me a LOT of money trying to make it into something nice.

Just be sensible - buy something Japanese, as it'll be quick, fun, and wont cost the earth.

An RS Turbo powered Mk5 5 Escort is just about the worst car I could think of for the money.

Fair enough Rich. Would I be making a big mistake to buy a mk6 1.6Si for the time being and also buy a 2.0 Zetec lump and spend some time buying bits and building it up?

If I could achieve around 180bhp in an Escort I can imagine it being plenty of fun. Would love to keep the Beemer but I'd rather be spending that money on stuff I want than giving it to the insurance co. Plus when I go to court it'll look good that I've downgraded to a slow car

My finances are starting to look good. I've got a loan through my old mother that's consolidated everything so I'm only paying the one bill each month now. It's so much easier. Feel like a weight has been lifted!

Once I get the insurance and running costs down I'm on easy street.

not being funny mate but RST engines are not exactly known for thier reliabiliy are they , especially ones chucked into another car . No one is having a pop at ya, but if you have just started to sort your finances out why risk buying somthing that might land you with a bill for a couple of K overnight?

get somthing thats decent to start with but reliable, heres a few cars on the trader I found that are rally good cars for the cash, you can do bits and bobs to them tomake them faster and are solid as hell

My personal fave- the Mk2 GTE16v- 156 BHP out the box, bulle tproof motor http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www...00640251739158

Another awsome, under-rated car- the Mk5/6 RS 2000- bullet proof motor, reliable, camchain so no cambelt worries, 150BHP out the bx, superb handling, recaro interior-Ł1000 http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www...00639250882977

How about a fiesta RS 1800? 130BHP, light car, reliable zetec http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www...00639251515136

I have personally had an astra GTE 16v, and chip will tell you how strong the engines are ,I have had an RS 2000 16v, never let me down in a year , not had a fiesta, but theyalways get good press.... What i'm saying in the long run is that a turbo car will cause you headaches, a decent N/A car will be better on fuel all day long, and if you DO blow an engine then you can pick a good replacement up for less than Ł300 there are loads of quick fun reliable cars if you look around , just be sensible....

Oh and I do sympathise, its a fucker when someone lets you down like that

You started off so well, and then it went horribly wrong all over again!

Mk6 1.8Si is the first car I had, and it was a great little car. Not remotely fast, but it was still a nice every day car.

Why would you want to buy a 2 litre engine a build it up? What for?

If you want more power, then look at the RS2000 with its 150bhp and proper badge.

Are you that experienced in driving, or do yuo really think 30bhp is going to make THAT much difference.

So you drop the 2 litre in, and you now have a modified Escort that's probably just dropped in re-sale value and audience.

The absolute secret to driving a nice car is either to have loads of money and buy one straight out, or gradually work your way up NOT spending the money modifying whatever it is you drive.

Leave the modifying obsession well alone unless you have the money to waste.

listen to your uncle rich, he's talking absolute sense. i agree with him 100% after having similar experiences to him. it's a shame that some can't learn from the mistakes of others and have to go through it all themselves.

i know it's probably not what you want to hear, but you would be wise to listen

Jay, i know where theres a Fiesta Rs1800 that will be just as quick as your after and not break the bank, even comes with an all expensese paid night out at THTH and teh Syndicate.

If you must have an RS, get one that will run forever without breaking.
