Default Diagnose this engine prob?Update ZVH help please!?

As above FRST with an 1800 ZVH and de-comp plate.

Blue smoke when driven above 2.5k, no smoke when idling and up to say 4k at a stand still? No oil on spark plug either.

Drives ok so not valves etc?

Compression test read as follows

1 - 11bar
2 - 11bar
3 - 10bar
4 - 5bar

Got to be a piston prob or HG??

Could be shattered ring lands on No4 mate, seen way to much of this latley Hopefully not though Whip the head off and see. If no signs of failure time to remove a piston

Is it breating heavy when you remove the oil cap?

Its not regular mate, i have just seen my mates engine die 4 times of this you could hear it DETTING a mile away turned out to be the fuel pump wiring faulty.

Most likley to be the head gasket gone though, but if not remove the piston and check.

yeah also just to point out, when a compression test was done x amount of weeks ago the first three were all within couple psi of each other. why would have this one got worse since,

thanks

Head is off now, no visible damage to the tops of the pistons will take the low cylinder one out at the weekend.

No signs of HG fooked.

None of the oil galleries have been plugged off as they should be, which ones should be the front four?

Also runs a de-comp plate and where there is i believe a water jacket hole there is only a small hole in the gasket and plate which only covers half the hole, if that makes any sense, doesnt to me I'll stick pics up 2moro.

Which HG should we be using on an 1800 zetec?

Can i reuse the decomp plate?

if its still running the t2 turbo then this will be the cause of the smoke as the zetec oil pump runs at higher pressure than the cvh 1 & due to the design of the oil return t2s are prone to failing as the oil pressure is to much for the sealing ring. even if itsa t3 this could still be the cause.
as for compression, did you do a wet & dry compression test as this would tell u if the problem was the head /gasket or the rings.
have the valves pressure tested to make sure they are sealing & get rid of the decomp plate as they are wank!

Cheers ian

It is still running the t2 and has fooked a few of em, could be through this, no way of leaving the t2 on there?

No way of lowering the cr without machining pistons etc is there?

I only did a dry comp test, mate did a wet one said the compression went up considerably but said he put a fair amount of oil in?

What head gasket would you recommend on a 1800?

What about the plugging of oil galleries? Doesn't seem to have any?!

Thanks again mate Very helpful!

Hi Ian,

thanks for the detailed reply, i hav not had the net for few days sohavent checked this post. I have only fooked one t2 before, i originally thought it was a turo problem because was down on power and chattered very quietly!

in we scrap the decomp plate will the compression not rise considerably?
the head has een skimmed before twice so think thats why the plate was fitted in there?!!!

if we fit some more standard machined zetec ones what boost will these take safely?

thanks

carl
