depends on the engine spec. Std internals you can argue anywhere betweem 180 and 250 bhp.

Easiest way is to decide what power output you want and then build the engine to suit that output.

If you are talking a completely standard engine apart from head work, probably 240 would be the safe and sensible limit.

180 after which clutches and gearboxes let go with alarming regularity. The up side is you'll get quick a changing them.

Beat me to it

How reliable the engine is will also depend on how much mechanical sympathy the driver has.

I really don't know why people have digs at rs turbo's and ford cvh engines.... Mine runs a very reliable 200bhp and have only had the fuel pump relay go during my time of ownership. Been by far the most reliable car I have ever owned as long as it is a healthy engine and is serviced at the correct intervals you will be fine. I recon 200bhp on a pritty much standard engine is your best bet as you do start pushing the limits of the standard components such as conrods etc.

I couldnt agree more.I've used my engine with std internals/headgasket/head,running between 16-18 psi for trackdays since 1995 and its still running very strong (ask Tim and Ollie!! ).Keep it regularly services and all will be well.Regards,Micky
